Extractions: THE WEEKLY TIRADE By Scotty Kowall The NHL season has begun and this year brings more than the usual soap opera storylines. Where to start? How about in the Western Conference? The Detroit Red Wings made Cujo their sacrificial lamb after getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. He didn't play as well as Jean-Sebastien Giguere but except for maybe Marty Brodeur, who did? Bringing in Dominik Hasek may sooth the fan's wrath but it won't help them score goals. Their new and improved defense looks solid but losing Fedorov to the Mighty Ducks will hurt. Ray Whitney will score some goals but the challenge will be keeping his plus minus respectable. The Red Wings won't dominate the league but they will definitely not fall again in the first round of the playoffs, unless they face another hot goaltender.... Sergei Fedorov and Vaclav Prospal move to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks while Paul Kariya moves to the Avalanche. There is no reason the Ducks won't compete for a top playoff spot, at least that is what I thought until their top defenseman Keith Carney broke his foot. Giguere is as good a goalie as there is but unless the Ducks keep the shots against to a minimum they will have a difficult time repeating. Fedorov is a better two-way player than Kariya and I am inclined to believe that the loss of Steve Thomas who wanted to remain with his family out East will hurt the team more than the loss of Kariya. If Fedorov proves his worth he will keep this team competitive and he should...

Editorial/opinion By TOM JONES, Times Staff Writer The Islanders took the season series 3-1, including three consecutive victories after the Lightning won the first meeting of the season on Nov. 20 at the St. Pete Times Forum. The Islanders went 1-1 at Tampa Bay, while the Lightning lost both games on Long Island. Two of the Islanders victories came in the past three weeks by a combined score of 6-1. THE GOALIES BEST MATCHUP Vinny Lecavalier, meet Michael Peca. If our guess is right, look for the hard-nosed Peca, who never met a player he didn't check and check hard, to become Lecavalier's shadow in this series. Peca, the Isles captain, is one of the best defensive forwards in the game and has twice won the Selke Award (top defensive forward), including in 2002. He can get under a player's skin and Lecavalier, who is fully capable, might have to get a little down and dirty to free himself from Peca in this series. BEST LINE They're a nightmare to spell and even worse to stop. Oleg Kvasha, Alexei Yashin and Mariusz Czerkawski make up the Islanders' most dangerous line. Every player on this line, particularly Yashin, often is accused of dogging it, but there's no question their talents are enormous. This line is good enough to carry a team in a series. If Peca can slow Lecavalier's line, the Lightning might have to get help from one of their other lines to stay in the series offensively.
