Extractions: The Obligatory Alexei Kovalev Article Tuesday - February 11, 2003 First off, let's get the obvious out of the way. Yes, the Rangers flat-out bought Alexei Kovalev from the Pittsburgh Penguins for an indeterminate amount of time and a very large cash advance. Yes, it was impossible for Glen Sather to physically restrain himself when a deal like this presented itself. Yes, Alex Kovalev is probably the most individually talented player in the NHL. And yes, it's an absolute joy to watch him play, so long as you're not watching him play for or against your team, especially when theyre barely treading water and their GM/coach just threw them a life preserver made of toilet paper by guaranteeing a playoff berth. Toilet paper? Alex Kovalev? Hes only the #2 leading scorer over the past four years, a force of nature that cannot be separated from the puck, a cannon for a slapshot and a snapshot that could twist metal. And hes only 29 years old. How could anyone find a flaw with a player like that? We were foolish to let him go in the first place, they say.

Extractions: On the Road Recently I visited northern New York for some American Hockey League action, among other things. Binghamton So I digress, to call Binghamton a small town would be a crime. This is a thriving city as big if not bigger than Syracuse, yet with a small town feel to it (the kind of town John Mellencamp sang about oh so long ago). People here are very friendly and willing to talk hockey as openly and as common as NCAA Basketball, which was more in the sports limelight this very night as Syracuse took on Vermont in March Madness action. As we sat and watched the Binghamton Senators take on the Hershey Bears, updated scores from the basketball game splashed across the scoreboard, and would be part of the between period out of town updates. The Before The fans making it out to cheer on their Senators are as die hard as they come. Out of 4.710 seats, over 2,300 of them are occupied by season ticket holders. An online silent auction for a game worn jersey sold for $280. I believe the player was Brian Pothier. I dare say they would have raised over $1000 had it been a Jason Spezza or Denis Hamel jersey up for grabs. Even The Given World Hockey Still Alive?

Extractions: MOSCOW (CP) - Teenager Alexander Ovechkin, the top-ranked prospect for this year's NHL entry draft, was among the players named to Russia's World Cup of Hockey squad Monday. Ovechkin, 18, played for Russia at this year's world hockey championship in Prague and is a forward with Dynamo Moscow. Russia was the last of the eight World Cup countries to announce its 26-man roster. Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, who replaced the legendary Viktor Tikhonov as the coach of the Russian team Friday, offered few surprises in unveiling the team. A total of 15 players on Russia's roster played for the national team at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. On Friday, the Russian hockey federation announced that Dainius Zubrus, of the NHL's Washington Capitals, would be on the World Cup team. Zubrus, 26, was born in Elektrenai, Lithuania, in 1978 when the country was still a Soviet republic. Zubrus has never played for Russia and according to the International Ice Hockey Federation isn't eligible to do so.

Extractions: ST. PAUL, Minn. One of the themes that has greeted Team USA on a daily basis during this World Cup of Hockey has been the debate over the team's collective age. At 31 years and change, the Americans are the oldest team in the tournament. Note the accent on are Younger squads like Sweden, Germany and now Russia are taking their teams home after being ousted. For the Americans, experience came to the fore Tuesday night at the Xcel Energy Center as Keith Tkachuk, Mike Modano and Bill Guerin combined for 11 points, with Tkachuk scoring four goals, as Team USA eliminated a very good Russian team, 5-3. The Americans will play Friday night at Xcel against either Finland or the Czech Republic. That matchup will be cemented after Wednesday night's Canada-Slovakia game in Toronto. For Team USA, the victory was sweet redemption and vindication all wrapped in one. In preliminary-round play last week, the Russians had their way with the Americans in a 3-1 victory that featured some pretty one-sided play in favor of the Russians. The loss served as both a wake-up call and rallying cry for the Americans, who made some lineup changes and then defeated the Slovaks, 3-1, and pronounced themselves back on track.
