Extractions: March 4, 2000 Men's Hockey Defeats UMass, 5-1 AMHERST, Mass. New Hampshire goaltender Ty Conklin turned away 25 of UMass' 26 shots on the night, leading UNH to a 5-1 win over UMass. UNH improves to 21-7-6, 12-5-6 in Hockey East, while UMass drops to 11-18-5 and 5-15-4 in conference play. UNH struck first with a Ryan Cordeiro goal at the 8:20 mark of the first period. Cordeiro rifled a shot through heavy traffic from 15 feet out, beating UMass goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.). The Wildcats added three more goals in the second period, pulling away to a 4-0 advantage. Matt Swain opened the second frame with his eighth goal of the season, taking a pretty Mike Souza pass skating across the slot and knocking the puck past Johnson. Colin Hemingway added the third UNH goal at the 8:02 mark of the second period, beating Johnson far-side for his third goal of the season. UMass substituted goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) after the third UNH goal, replacing Johnson just over eight minutes into the period. Darren Haydar scored his 21st goal of the season at the 14:15 mark, putting the Wildcats up 4-0. UMass finally got on the board at the 7:31 mark of the third period. Freshman Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) passed ahead to his brother Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) on the right side of the slot for his team-leading 15th goal of the season. UNH struck right back less than a minute later with a Mike Souza power play goal at the 8:19 mark. UMass appeared to score their second goal when senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffvile, Ont.) slapped a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and deflected straight down, but somehow never crossed the line. The Wildcats outshot the Minutemen 15-9 in the final period.

Extractions: home archives columns post ... search Please Support Michael Johnson speaks out on the Athens 2004 Olympics : saying that they will "pale in comparison" to Sydney's 2000 Games. He also says that he can see the IOC offering prize money to medalists, something Johnson "wouldn't disagree" to. (more inside). posted by Ufez Jones to Olympics at 11:02 AM CST (13 comments total) This is reported exactly one year before the opening ceremony of the 2004 games . 2004 will mark the 100th anniversary of the modern games and Athens is a largely symbolic choice. Even if their facilities aren't as good and the town isn't as prepared, does the atmosphere and significance outweigh the facilitation, at least from a fan's point of view? And how do you feel about reward money for medalists? From my point of view, I think it's great for those athletes in the less popular sports. I mean, name one legendary javeline thrower. But the endorsements for those athletes in the popular sports (and I'm not even going to bring up the NBA guys playing) will probably far outweigh any token prize money the IOC could offer. posted by Ufez Jones at 11:05 AM CST on August 13 I disagree about the money thing. The whole cool thing about the Olympics is that (mostly) non-professional athletes compete to win. That's it. They may get $$ and endorsements afterwards, but the thrill is in the winning. If you throw money into it, it cheapens the whole thing.

Extractions: Northeastern couldnt overcome a 4-0 third-period deficit, losing a 4-1 decision in Hockey East action before 2752 fans at Lawler Arena Friday night. The Huskies fall to 8-15-6 overall and 2-12-5 in Hockey East play. The Warriors increase their unbeaten streak to three games, while improving to 11-16-4 and 6-12-4. "Obviously its a very disappointing loss," said NU coach Bruce Crowder. "We have fought back from a bad start to the season to get us into position to control our own destiny and we couldnt get the job done." With the Huskies trailing 4-0 in the third period, sophomore Mike Morris netted his eighth goal of the season on a nifty backhander with a man-advantage at 5:48. Morris took a pass from Eric Ortlip along the right boards, skated around a defender and across the crease. MC netminder Jim Healy (31 Saves) went down as Morris was at the left post and the right-winger lobbed a backhand shot over Healy. After two periods of play, NU goalie Keni Gibson (16 saves) was replaced by sophomore Tim Heneroty, which ended Gibsons run of 24 straight games in net. Freshman Adam Geragosian was the last netminder to see time between the pipes other than Gibson Nov. 1, 2003 in a 5-2 loss to UMass Lowell. Heneroty played flawlessly over the final 20 minutes, making nine saves.
