Extractions: Innsbruck, AUT Canada plays Finland on Sunday in its second game of the qualification round of the world championship tournament. A loss to the Finns could result in Canada finishing fourth in their bracket and a possible quarter-final match-up against the Czech Republic. Team Canada had the edge, both in territorial advantage and on the scoreboard in the opening period. Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley scored 35 seconds apart on Henrik Lundqvist, who was perhaps the best goalie in Europe this season. For those keeping track, that marked six straight goals the Canadians scored on Lundqvist, including four last year in a 5-3 win in the gold medal final in Prague. But the Swedes made it 2-1 before the period ended on a goal by Daniel Sedin. Rick Nash continued with his hot hand and tied it in the third with his seventh goal in four games but Kenny Jonsson put a rebound past Marty Brodeur late in the period for the winner. The Canadians knew they played a bad game but they had already moved on by the time they emerged to talk to the media.

Check the Past beeHive Pool Winners Wall of Fame Here's some humble words from the winner: Yes, the Rogue Puck will be taken to a land without snow, without ice, without below zero temperatures. It will never again be shot over the boards at the rink (what's a rink?) or feel the slice of a sharp skate (a sharp what?). In a land where "skating" means "roller blading", the kids around here won't know what to make of this hard, black chunk of rubber. Like the Winnipeg Jets, one of hockey's greatest prizes has been stolen and taken from its rightful place. So, how should we feel. The rest of you, of course, should be ashamed to have let this happen. Me, I'm just glad that "you can take the boy outta the country, but you can't take the hockey outta the boy." Big applause to Bill for organizing and thanks to everyone for letting me engage in this shameless gloating. I expect to get my sorry expatriated butt kicked soundly next year. **the numbers in ( )'s are their standing this year, just in case anyone wanted to keep track.

It is with a profound sense of awe and humility that I accept this year's Rogue Puck for the regular season hockey pool. Clearly my incredible foresight was exemplified in my stunning initial team selection that immediately catapulted me into the top five. >From that point on, it was simply a matter of time before I claimed the top spot with several strategic trades that demonstrated my profound understanding of the intricacies of managing a hockey pool team. I guess the only thing left to say is, IN YOUR FACE ROB (and the rest of you too)!!! Paul "who wants Yashin?" We must put aside our differences and unite in a common cause: Don't let Fera win this pool!!

More Than Just A Scorer every kid growing up playing hockey right now, said countryman jonas hoglund. When he got traded to Toronto, that was a big story in Sweden, hoglund http://www.mats-sundin.com/article24.html
Extractions: mapleleafs.commentator With glacial-like speed, the questioning calls to sports radio and letters to local newspapers slowed and have virtually become nonexistent, creating the strange sensation they might have referred to another man, another team, another time. No longer does Pat Quinn have to unleash his annual, pre-playoff, head-shaking diatribe about the foolishness of anyone who would question Mats Sundin's character or his ability to lead one of the most storied franchises in pro sports. And so it should be for the Toronto Maple Leafs' captain and the newest member of the NHL's 1,000-point club. Sundin managed the feat Monday night versus the Edmonton Oilers on a pretty wraparound goal to beat fellow Swede, Tommy Salo. Alexei Ponikarovsky had the distinction of assisting on 1000. He is only the fifth player to reach the 1,000-point mark while wearing a Leaf jersey (the others are Norm Ullman, Glenn Anderson, Doug Gilmour and Larry Murphy). While the lights shine brightly on Sundin's accomplishment he will also play in his 1,000th NHL game, likely March 24th against Boston it comes at a time when he has taken his game to a special place, the leader whose worth is not judged solely by the score sheet. "I think his game is better," said Toronto coach and general manager Pat Quinn. "He was depended on to do lots of scoring and sometimes when you're looking for scoring chances, offensive guys I call it 'cheat' a little bit, because they have to score."
Supafamous: Are You Ready For Some Hockey? Just got back from my hockey pool draft and most of the guys involved seem to have Radek Dvorak (107th), jonas hoglund (118th), Jere Lehtinen (123th), http://www.supafamous.com/archives/2002/10/000499.shtml
Extractions: Are you ready for some hockey? Just got back from my hockey pool draft and most of the guys involved seem to have gotten smarter with the drafting methods. Old guys were left swinging in the breeze for ages, injury prone players were mostly ignored and only a few clueless picks were made. I picked 6th out of 8 guys and nabbed Markus Naslund there. On the way back around the horn I got Sundin 11th overall. Other picks included : Pavol Demitra (22nd), Peter Bondra (27th), Ryan Smith (38th), Radek Bonk (43rd), Robert Lang (54th), Glen Murray (59th), Brian Rolston (70th), Brett Hull (75th), Anson Carter (86th), Darcy Tucker (91th), Jan Hrdina (102th), Radek Dvorak (107th), Jonas Hoglund (118th), Jere Lehtinen (123th), and Bryan Smolinski (134th). It's 17 players with the bottom two not counting. I'm glad to have gotten Bonk, Lang and Murray so late but I'm a little concerned that I have 3 Maple Leafs. I really wanted to grab a couple Colorado players as I think Hejduk and Tanguay are due for big years but other people reached for those guys before I was ready to make the move. I'm looking forward to continuing my fine traditional of collecting other people's money in sports pools. Anyone else in a pool this year?

Take the NHL's latest analysis about the birthplaces of NHL players on opening day rosters of the 30 clubs. Of the 717 players surveyed, 375 are Canadian, which represents a drop of five players from opening night a year ago. There were six fewer players born in the United States (101 compared to 107), while the number of Europeans increased by 14 to 241. Percentage wise, Canadians-born players made up 52.3 percent of the NHL, which was down slightly from 53.2 per cent a year ago. Europeans came in at 33.6 per cent, which was a jump from 31.8, and Americans were down marginally, 14.1 percent from 15.0.
