If the end of the regular season is any indication of what is to follow, then Dukla Trencin -fans can be in for a real treat. The Slovak giants won eight out of their nine games played in February in the Slovak Extraliga and were on fire. Especially offensively Trencin's performance was unmatched. They completely shell-shocked Liptovsky Mikulas (12-5) and HK Skalica (10-3), but also defeated competitors HKm Zvolen (3-2) and Slovan Bratislava (4-0). Only HC Kosice was able to put sand in the well oiled machine (0-2). Much of the offensive power can be credited to the first offensive line of the team. The Trencin Trio hosts no less than three top NHL-players: Marian Hossa Pavol Demitra and Marian Gaborik Whilst Pavol Demitra is probably the most consistent player over the course of the whole regular season (most goals, assists, points and best +/- record this year in the Slovak league) and set some new national records, it was Gaborik who stole the show in February.

The winner for November 2004 is Marian Hossa of Mora IK in Elitserien (Sweden) and HK Dukla Trencin (Slovak Extraliga). Other than his blistering speed and finesse, Hossa is known for him being a potent scoring threat at any level. He does not deliver bone-crushing hits or drop his gloves, but finishes his checks and uses his size and strong upper body to hold off opponents and win battles along the boards. He is tough to stop legally coming off the boards and heading to the net.

A few days ago it looked like Marian Gaborik and the Minnesota Wild had settled in for a long-term standoff. Today, Minnesota's budding superstar is back in the fold with a new contract. Bryan Berard has found a job, too. ESPN reports that Gaborik has a three-year deal worth $10-million . If accurate, the settlement would represent a compromise by both sides, though the base salary is much closer to the team's most recent offer than Gaborik's reported demand of $4.4-million annually. As recently as Monday, Gaborik and the Wild appeared irreconcilable

Marian Gaborik arrived in St. Paul last week, hoping to iron out a new contract with the team. Today, he left town again, but not before the two sides issued duelling press releases. If reports on the negotiations are accurate, this mess has its roots in the infamous rookie salary cap

So far, it has worked to a tee. Minnesota didn't create unrealistic expectations of Gaborik, the third-overall pick of the 2000 draft, as a franchise savior like Tampa Bay Lightning owner Art Williams did with 1998 top-overall pick Vincent Lecavalier, when he called him "the Michael Jordan of Hockey." The Wild didn't want to put that kind of pressure on Gaborik.
