However, any modern fan who looks at Fuhr's career numbers may wonder about his ability: a career 3.38 goal against average and 25 career shutouts over 19 seasons do not seem like such great goaltending numbers. Fuhrs glory years came at the height of what some pundits called the "Air Hockey Years" of the 1980s. The Oilers run-and-gun style, which saw them score over 400 goals a season, created an offensive revolution in the game. In 1983-84, the Oilers first championship season, 13 of the NHLs 21 teams scored more than 300 goals in the regular season. In the 21st century, none of the NHLs 30 teams even got close to the 300-goal mark. Because of the rise of end-to-end hockey, goalies were constantly under duress. Shutouts were rare, and a goalie could be outstanding and still allow four goals in a night. The real measure of Fuhrs importance to the Oilers comes by simply looking at his career win totals, which include 403 regular-season triumphs and an amazing 92 career playoff wins. Most of

Black Hockey Players In The NHL Recently retired goaltender grant fuhr is considered to be the most successful black Willie O Ree became hockey s version of Jackie Robinson on Jan. http://www.factmonster.com/spot/bhmhockey1.html
Extractions: According to league reports, only 18 black players reached the NHL between 1958 and 1991. While racism certainly played some role in keeping the figure to a minimum, it may have been more a function of the demographic makeup of Canada . In 1971, Canadians made up over 95% of the NHL, and only .02% of all Canadians were black. Today, the black population in Canada has increased to 2%. In addition, the United States, with a much higher black population than Canada, now contributes approximately 15% of all NHL players while Canada produces just over 60%. Extractions: WHEN BOTH WERE YOUNG (1982) They were the Infants Terrible of the National Hockey League as young teammates on the Edmonton Oilers. Gretsky may have gone on to greater fame but Grant Fuhr is just as amazing if not more as hockey's most prolific Black player so far. Fuhr just got what he deserved on his first try election to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. The first Black player ever to enter that Hall. This tale of storied success had its beginning back on September 28, 1962 with Fuhr's birth in Alberta. Since then it has been all hockey from the moment he was able to stand on skates. We can fast forward to his days with the Edmonton Oilers. Between 1984 and 1990 he and Gretsky led the Oilers to six Stanley Cup Championships. Between Gretsky's skating and scoring and Fuhr's goal tending they dominated the ice unlike any other two superstars in the history of the game the perfect one two punch scoring and stopping the opposition from scoring. Those years were certainly his Best Days
