UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE (05/16/99) That s playoff hockey! Ukrainian defenseman Richard Matvichuk back from kneeinjuries. COLORADO Wade Belak, D, traded to Calgary in theo fleury deal; http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1999/209926.shtml
Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Go look outside. It's reigning again. Yup, reigning. Thanks in large part to the dizzying deals they made at the NHL's trading deadline, the Detroit Red Wings are the odds-on favorites to become the franchise to win three consecutive Stanley Cups since the New York Islanders accomplished that feat in the early 1980s. Of course, the Wings should face plenty of competition - particularly from within their own conference. The Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche are ranked very high as this year's Cup contenders. Here's the skinny on this season's 16 playoff qualifiers, listed in order of overall strengths. (Teams marked with an asterisk were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.) No. 1 - Detroit Red Wings Primary strength is depth. No team has four lines that can score and grind like these guys. As long as netminder Chris Osgood does his job, as he did last spring, the rejuvenated Wings with Chris Chelios, Wendel Clark and company should win another Stanley Cup. No. 2 - Dallas Stars

Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach World-class shinny No matter what changes the NHL institutes to its All-Star Game format - this year, for the first time, it was North America versus the World - it remains a non-hitting game of shinny. A goal by Mark Messier proved to be the winner as the North American side edged the World team 8-7 on January 18. League officials hoped the new format would lead to more spirited physical play, and there were more nudges along the boards than usual, but no major collisions. "You think guys are going to go out there and hammer each other in an exhibition game?" asked Captain Coyote Keith Tkachuk, one of three NHLers of Ukrainian descent participating in the 1998 gala event. "Not a chance. We're not out there trying to hurt each other. That would be dumb." The closeness of the score kept things interesting, though the World team threatened to make it a blowout in the early going. Four minutes into the first period, it had built a 3-0 lead on the fastest two goals from the start of an All-Star game. North America's comeback from the 3-0 deficit was the biggest in All-Star Game history. The excitable Tkachuk led the North American attack with a pair of goals. No. 1 NHL player of all time Wayne Gretzky drew two assists, the first of which moved him past Mario Lemieux into sole possession of first place in All-Star Game scoring. Gretzky has 12 goals and 22 points in 17 games.

Police said a woman pulled in front of McNair's pickup truck as he was traveling down a street in the Music Row area near downtown Nashville, Tennessee. "McNair had no contributing factor to the crash," Metro Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said Thursday. Jennifer Conrad, 24, of Cedar Hill told police she was unfamiliar with the area and was trying to make a U-turn on the one-way street. Aaron said no injuries were officially reported. Conrad was cited for causing the accident and for driving without insurance.

If you're looking for one word to describe the 1996 World Cup of Hockey tournament, that's the one that best describes the tourney in which the hockey world's elite players went nose-to-nose for global bragging rights. An encore will be tough, but eight nations are gearing up for the 2004 World Cup that will commence play on Aug. 30, 2004. The United States, the defending champion of the 1996 tournament and 2002 Olympic silver medalist will be joined by 2002 Olympic gold medal-winner Canada, Russia and Slovakia in the North American pool. There was one stipulation and that is Fleury must continue an obligation to comply with a prescribed treatment and aftercare program sponsored by the NHLPA and the NHL.
