Extractions: Hockey Digest , Dec, 2000 by Chuck O'Donnell There was a lot of noise last year about Theo Fleury's disappointing first season in New York. This year, the feisty winger is determined to turn those boos and murmurs into cheers. THE RANGERS WANTED TO REVAMP their organization this summer, so they made Glen Sather the man in charge of finding the right men. He went and maxed out their credit cards, bringing in Mark Messier for leadership, Sandy McCarthy for muscle, and Vladimir Malakhov for defense. The general manager then hand-picked Ron Low to coach them. Everyone from the stick boy to the head of scouting has been brought aboard with the express purpose of returning the Rangers to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Hovering below the radar screen, however, is the player who took the most blame for last season's fiasco. The man who can probably do more to turn the team's karma around than anyone else sat back in his offseason home in Shuswap, British Columbia and took in the flurry of moves. But what really grabbed Theo Fleury's attention was Theo Fleury. He had turned his focus inside and began to do some painful soul searching.

Dear Theoren Fleury - Ice Hockey theo fleury claims he doesn´t care if he plays in the NHL again. Do we really care? Dear theoren fleury - Ice hockey is a personally written site at http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art16687.asp
Extractions: Hmmm, here is what I am thinking: How many people out there really care if Fleury does ever play in the NHL again? I dont believe the league needs to adopt a policy, as so many other sport leagues do, of continually giving substance abuse offenders chance after chance. That would put the league in a sorry state. Fleury, listed at 5 6 and 182 pounds at 35 years of age, has made claims that people dont want to watch 1-0 games and that is the way teams are trying to win. It would be ludicrous to think that teams are trying to win by a 1-0 score. If that were their playing philosophy one lucky goal would cost them the win. Playing a defensive style may be the goal of many teams, but I really dont see how the true hockey fan would find that boring. These sound more like the words of a one-dimensional player. Fleury has achieved marks of 455 goals and 633 assists to total 1088 points in 1084 games. Respectable numbers to say the least, but I do hope that the league recognizes the need to protect its reputation and not allow the leagues rules to become a joke. The NHL does not need the likes of a Darryl Strawberry situation as in Major League Baseball.

As a Wheat King, I wish he'd just stop. What's the G'n'R tune, "i used to love her, but I had to kill her, I had to put her, six feet under." Any chance we can get Axl to do a Elton John're-working' of the lyrics to be played in every arena he visits? Well, it was worth a shot. Theo, Theo, Go Home! posted by garfield to Hockey at 12:12 PM CST (5 comments total) Theo is my 2nd former favorite player to go sour (Canseco being the other), but I'm still sort of rooting for him. I was expecting that link to be about some new controversy, but he seems genuinely interested in improving himself and becoming a star again. If he can stay sober and out of trouble and pull it off, I'm all for another few years of him... posted by Bernreuther at 6:00 PM CST on April 8 I'm in the same boat, Bern ... even though he plays for the hated 'Hawks, I'd still like to see the guy pull through. I guess the question is whether or not perpetually rebuilding Chicago can afford to have roster space eaten up by a guy who doesn't have a whole lot left in the tank when they could be developing another young player. posted by wfrazerjr at 6:07 PM CST on April 8 Don't get me wrong, I loved the guy at one point. Who couldn't? A pint-sized dynamo racking up points. But it seems that his personal life has distracted him to the point of not remembering what got him here-playing hockey, and playing well. I had hope before his last few strikes(ragners rehab, getting pikced up by the hawks), but after failing in that 'over-protected' environment, it just seems futile at this point. Hey, maybe a little optimism is in order, but Theo has lost my trust.

For Gods sake guys, just hang em up! posted by Mookieproof at 11:33 AM CST on July 29 I don't really hate the guy (but I do admit to thinking he's a whiner), I just think he's about done. In the last three seasons he's played 43, 24, and 67 games a year. He's always in pain. Even Mario-hataz like me have grudging respect for the guy, but it woud be nice to see him go out before he become the punch line to a joke about IR. If he plays this year, I don't think he'll be able to play more than half the season.
