Click here to submit your question Wednesday, October 25, 2000 Q: I was wondering if forechecking and playing 60 minutes of solid hockey is against the Penguins' religion. They seem unable or unwilling to do it. Brandon Dunn of Wexford KOVACEVIC: Religion? Boy, that's a little harsh for a team that's off to a 4-2-1 start, Brandon. For a club that's going to rely heavily perhaps obsessively on puck possession, forechecking really isn't that big of a deal. You only really need to forecheck when you're employing a dump-and-chase technique, which is something that is completely foreign to this particular group of Penguins. They would much prefer to gain control of the puck, carry it into the attacking zone and make plays from there. I'll share with you an interesting observation I got from Dave King, the coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, when his team was in town Saturday. He told me that the Penguins are the best team he has seen maybe ever within the first 2 feet just inside the blue line. They make countless passes and plays in that precarious zone, he said, with a surprisingly low number of turnovers. He added that this is what makes a team like Pittsburgh so difficult to prepare for. They're simply not like anyone else.
