Extractions: UKRAINIAN PRO HOCKEY UPDATE by Ihor Stelmach Enthusiastic Hrudey retires with no regrets San Jose Sharks' goaltender Kelly Hrudey traded in his goalie mask and pads for a microphone. He called it an even swap. Hrudey, 37, closed the book on his 15-year NHL playing career when he announced his retirement on July 30, 1998. But he planned to stay real close to his beloved sport by working as a color commentator for Hockey Night in Canada. "I have no formal training (in broadcasting), but I sure enjoy it," Hrudey said. "I'm going to tackle this as enthusiastically as I have my hockey career." Hrudey, who also played for the New York Islanders and Los Angeles Kings, announced his retirement after the Sharks acquired goalie Steve Shields from the Buffalo Sabres. "I have no regrets," Hrudey said at the time. "My retirement is a celebration, not a sad event." The venerable netminder posted a career record of 271-265-88 (wins-losses-ties) and a goals-against-average of 3.43 with 17 career shutouts. He played in the Stanley Cup final in 1993 with the Kings and stopped 73 of 75 shots to lead the New York Islanders to a dramatic 3-2, four-overtime Game 7 victory over the Washington Capitals in the 1987 playoffs. Despite such a long and storied tenure in the NHL, Hrudey said the most memorable moment of his entire career came at the very start. "The No. 1 highlight (was being) told I had made the New York Islanders (in 1983). What a thrill that was! They were four-time defending Stanley Cup champions. I remember going out in the parking lot and raising my arms in the air like in the movie 'Rocky', at the top of the stairs."

Hockeybird.com: Rangers Throttle Isles, Demand Lunch Money greg devries, of late the Rangers best defenseman and stunning counter to theargument that hockey is different here. Next Game, Thursday, New Jersey http://mt.hockeybird.com/archives/002089.html
Extractions: Rangers Throttle Isles, Demand Lunch Money Wednesday - January 14, 2004 The Broadway Blueshirts whip the Islanders, 3-2, tie Tampa, 1-1, and then smack the Islanders again and call them Sally in a 4-1 drubbing. Almost 20% of the Rangers total points this season has come from the Isles thanks, girls! Now put on this lipstick, tie your hair back with a bow and prance around the coliseum singing "Waterloo." After phoning in most of last week and it wasn't even a good phone call, more like some late-nite drunken message left on an answering machine the Rangers are semi-hot these days, thanks mostly to our prison bitches east of the Midtown Tunnel. All this despite the fact that our best defenseman is hurt and Glen Sather has legally gone insane. Good times. The Return of the Dude Mike Dunham's last three games: .933, .949, .947 SV% and 2.00, 1.93, 1.00 GAA, five points total. The Dude is hot. It's tough to read anything into this, as Mike Dunham OWNS the Islanders if the Isles are our prison bitches, Mike Dunham is the evil corrections officer than locks the shower door but Dunham has been working with the Rangers goalie coach of late and it seems to be paying off. In all three games, Dunham denied at least one sure goal with an all-out circus save. Those are the kinds of things that separate good goalies from the Garth Snows of the world. Have I picked on the Isles enough yet? Here, Jason Blake, put on this dress and dance the macarena. It's the little moments like these that keep me a Rangers fan.

Extractions: Germs, Phlegm, Hacking Cough Propel Rangers Wednesday - December 31, 2003 Happy Holidays! The New York Rangers stricken to a man with the flu, right down to Herr Chancellor Sather somehow manage to fight through their congestion with improbable back-to-back come-from-behind overtime victories against the Kayutes and the Kings. Let's hear it for influenza! Lost among the aspirin and mucusy tissues is the fact that the Rangers were badly outplayed in both games, and short of scoring on their own goalie ... actually, they did score on their own goalie (Jed Ortmeyer's fantastic deflection over Jussi Markkanen's shoulder). How is this team winning games? Who knows. Anyway, the Rangers have been down in the third period for the past three games and taken five of six points in the end. Yippee kay-yay, mother f**ker. Hugs for everybody. Dude or Jussi? If I could get serious for a moment, as some of you may actually read this column for insightful information there is a legitimate goaltending battle between Mike Dunham and Jussi Markkanen right now. No one is talking about it, and Dunham is still technically number one, but shakey play by The Dude lately has opened the door for the Jussinator and he hasn't quite disappointed. Dunham stole two points in the get-the-f-out-of-Dodge win against Phoenix, but the Jusser stole two points last night against LA. My advice? If you have one of these guys, get the other. I think they're going to tandem down the stretch, maybe at a 60/40 rate. I haven't been this excited about a fight since CT punched that French dude on Real World: Paris.

Extractions: In spite of the sign, residents of the Whitefish River First Nation rubbed their eyes and thought they were dreaming when the vision of hockey's highest team award showed up at their minor hockey banquet. (Mike Bolt) There is strong evidence to believe that Canada's First Nations people played a sizeable role in helping hockey take root in Canada. The Mi'kmaq Tribe from Nova Scotia, for example, played stick and ball games locally that were likely adopted and adapted by British military personnel when they arrived in Canada in the 1800's. We know with full certainty that the Mi'kmaq mass-produced the first hockey sticks late in that century. So, with full respect, it was especially pleasing for the Stanley Cup to visit the Whitefish River First Nation on Birch Island for their year-end minor hockey banquet. There is a strong spiritual essence to this area, dating back a century to when the ancestors of today's residents inhabited the entire area. Birch Island is nestled just east of beautiful and historical Manitoulin Island at an interesting crossroads of fresh water sources. The island is located in sparkling Georgian Bay, with Lake Huron just below to the south, Lake Superior to the west and Lake Michigan to the south-west. By virtue of the riches with which nature has blessed the area, you can imagine that fishing, boating and hiking would be the principal pastimes of both residents and visitors to the area. But don't think for a second that hockey is not a serious contender!
