Extractions: Todd Bertuzzi was villified in the media across the world in 2004, but many Canucks fans still supported him. The upward progression of the club over the past five seasons had created the highest demand for Canucks regular season tickets ever. After selling out their final 31 home games and all eight home playoff games in 2002-03, season ticket subscriptions reached the 17,000 level this summer and a waiting list was created for the first time in franchise history. 18,630 jammed into GM Place on October 11 to see the Canucks beat Calgary 4-1. Rookie RW Jason King scored his first NHL goal in the third period, drawing assists from the Sedins in what would be the Canucks most productive line over the first couple of months of the season. Two nights later, G Johan Hedberg blanked Edmonton, 3-0, making him the second goaltender after Mike Fountain in 1996-97 to record a shutout in his Canucks debut. The Canucks lost their next two games and then went 7-0-2 in their next nine. This was despite the fact that the top line of Naslund, Morrison, and Bertuzzi was producing well below expectations. King, however, scored 11 goals in his first 19 games and was the talk of the town. But it was mostly team defence that was rescuing the club. Blamed for their failure in previous playoff experiences, improvement in that area was noted.

Extractions: Selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the sixth round, 144th overall in the 1997 Entry Draft. BACKGROUND/ACQUIRED Cooke played for the Kingston Frontenacs and Windsor Spitfires of the OHL from 1995- 1998. He was the usual callup during the 1999-2000 season, bouncing from Vancouver and Syracuse of the AHL for 2 years of his carrer. He became a regular on the Canucks lineup in 2000-2001 season. Cooke is a player that you wouldn't want to play against. He's just a rat out on the ice and he annoys players like crazy. That's a good thing for Canucks fans, but a bad thing for the opposing hockey club.

Extractions: April 11th, 2004 - by Dan Bredefeld, Canucks HQ The Flames were spurred on by a loud and boisterous home crowd, but despite some early jump and strong physical play were unable to build any real momentum. The Vancouver side did well to weather the storm and, thanks in part to an early power play, had the better of the play in the first 10 minutes. They could not open the scoring however, and Calgary regained some momentum in the latter half of the period, looking dangerous on several power play opportunities. Craig Conroy hit the post twice and Vancouver goalie Dan Cloutier was solid, keeping the game scoreless. He made a key play to poke a loose puck away from Chris Simon while sprawled out in the goal crease on a Calgary power play. With Cloutier out of the game, Hedberg started the second period in the Vancouver goal and was beaten at 1:04 on just the second shot he faced. Brad May misplayed the rebound of a long Jarome Iginla shot and with Mattias Ohlund already heading up-ice, Iginla pounced on the puck and found Matthew Lombardi down low. He relayed to Chris Simon in the slot and the big winger one-timed the puck past Hedberg, who had no chance on the play..

As reported in the Long Island Press , Benoit Hogue, 38, has joined with his friends on three different teams. One of them the Rinx Ratz of the no-hitting Midnight Hockey League. "I have a good time. I love to get on the ice. I love to play, " he says. Matt Cooke Another instance of note is comments from Cliff Ronning . "I was skating with beer-league players guys who play the game for the love of it," he says. "I was paying $10 a night to go and skate it shows how much I still wanted to play. Playing with guys who were 40 and 50 and never got the chance to play in the NHL was a fun experience. You get back to what hockey really is, where you're playing for the love of the game." CANUCKS WIN MUST WIN GAME Canucks 1 LA Kings It's a wonder Dan Cloutier didn't come out for the third period of Wednesday night's game with a glass of warm milk and a crossword. And who could have blamed him if he did? After all, 40 minutes of standing around on that cold ice while everyone skates around at the other end would eventually weigh on even the most active of imaginations. In the end, the Kings did manage a pair of testers with the clock winding down in the final frame to keep Cloutier lucid, but he was able to stop both Anson Carter and Luc Robitaille to earn his fifth shut out and 28th win of the season. Matt Cooke scored the only goal the Canucks needed midway through the first period as Vancouver played an airtight defensive game for their first win in five tries. They had a half dozen other great chances to beat Cristobal Huet, like Geoff Sanderson's third period wrister off a two-on-one rush that hit a pad and a post before bouncing wide, but they didn't need them. The Canucks were absolutely stifling Wednesday night. "I think that was one of the best games of the year defensively," said Cloutier, who made his first appearance since missing two games with strained hip-flexor. "I thought we were outstanding. Every defender played well and the guys came back and helped out. It really looked good out there."
