January 2000 wendel clark is a true hockey icon and stands as a classic hero to young hockeyfans of the Leafs and indeed exemplifies good, tough Canadian hockey. http://www.barrystagg.com/spjan00.htm
Extractions: SPEAKING OF SPORTS by Barry Stagg January 2000 **Internet published only** This is a reprised ( re-run actually) column from August 1994. Given the Leafs interest in signing free agent Wendel Clark, it is interesting to look back at the controversial event that took him from Toronto in the first place. Wendel Clark owes Toronto nothing. Never has an athlete left town after a trade with less debt owing to the team that brought him to the National Hockey League. When Clark was traded by Leaf General Manager Cliff Fletcher, he walked away after giving nine years of gristle, bone, heart, and health to a Toronto Maple Leaf hockey team that often did not deserve the effort that he gave nevertheless. Wendel Clark is a true hockey icon and stands as a classic hero to young hockey fans of the Leafs and indeed exemplifies good, tough Canadian hockey. Many a Toronto Maple Leafs fan will be marking down on the calendar the date of Quebec Nordiques October visit to Maple Leaf Gardens. There will be an emotional welcome for Wendel Clark as his fans give Wendel his proper farewell: on the ice in front of a full house at Maple Leaf Gardens. It won't be the last time that Wendel Clark comes through Toronto, but the next time he does he will be coming through as an enemy missile with Leaf fans and Leaf players knowing full well that Wendel will be cutting no corners and pulling no punches when he has the opportunity and the obligation to go in the corner and flatten Doug Gilmour.

Extractions: SPEAKING OF SPORTS by Barry Stagg March 1995 Wendel on the Plains of Abraham This is the month when all the semi-retired N.H.L. stalwarts finally round into major league shape after settling the nauseating lockout/strike and hitting the ice in a scurrying January season opening. For certain the team to beat in the early going is the Wendel Clark version of the Quebec Nordiques. Clark has the poly-ethnic Nords playing confident ,winning hockey as he scores at a nifty point-a-game pace. Nominal team captain Joe Sakic is leading the entire league in scoring and he is giving every indication that this year's scoring champion will be from the land of cold-footed seperatists. Quebec has also been astute enough to seek early Newfoundland help as it called up A.H.L. sharpshooter Dwayne Norris in February. The smarts that Norris possesses after stints as a star forward in American college hockey and in international junior and Olympic play were just too much for this surging team to ignore. Obviously Quebecersalready know that Newfoundland is a ready source of wealth for their province and its industries. Every time a " pure laine" Quebecois flicks on a light with the help of Churchill Falls electricity he should thank someone in Ottawa for the cheap resources of the tenth province. I sincerely hope that Norris gets the biggest contract ever out of the Nordiques and thus does his patriotic part to restore balance to the flow of cash between the provinces.

October 25 in Kelvington Saskatchewan Canada ), was a professional ice hockey player. Clark was selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Entry Draft. His professional career lasted from 1985 until 2000 during which time he played for the Maple Leafs (during three separate stretches), Quebec Nordiques New York Islanders Tampa Bay Lightning Detroit Red Wings , and Chicago Blackhawks He is known for his emotional, physical play combined with a moderate level of scoring prowess. The serious back injury that Clark suffered during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks in when he was cross-checked into the crossbar of his goal probably ruined his chances of being a true superstar. While he was known for grit and physical play (1690 career penalty minutes) he did manage an impressive forty-six goals for the Leafs during the 1993-94 season. The love Toronto has for their former captain could be seen in his 2000 return to the club. Indeed, when Wendel Clark returned to the Maple Leafs for that playoff run, he received a 4 minute standing ovation after Clark 'barreled into the New Jersey zone' and hit the post in Gane 1, marking likely the first time a player has received a standing ovation for almost scoring.
