Extractions: Home Biozone Articles Hockey Week Three Hockey Week Three By Tom Ohle Nov 25, 2002 The pace has been picking up fairly steadily over at the old arena, as BioWarriors have been honing their hockey skills on a weekly basis. This week, take a look at a heated battle between two sure-to-be-NHL-bound-soon teams. Still somewhat sidelined by my earlier collarbone injury-as a precaution, I don't feel like getting on the ice quite yet-and also partly unable to skate due to a lack of fitting skates, I have taken up coaching the dark-jerseyed team known as "Team Ashley." It's a spirited bunch of young bucks, reminiscent of the Quebec Nordiques of days past: not the greatest team ever assembled, but well they try. Our opponents on this fine day? Our arch nemesis, "Team Mary-Kate." Imagine putting Shane Churla, Tony Twist, Dave Semenko, Tie Domi, and Bob Probert all on one team, and you've got Team Mary-Kate. Bruisers and nothing but. Could we possibly overcome this seemingly insurmountable foe? We came out hard right from the beginning, and Mary-Kate could barely contain their frustration. A few choice words were thrown in my direction as I gave them a hard time about their poor play. We jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, and held it for quite some time. After some stellar saves by Tony "The Wall" de Waal, Mary-Kate brought the game to within 1 goal at 3-2. The team exchanged goals pretty steadily for the next half-hour or so, and with very little time remaining, the score rested at 7-6 in favor of Team Ashley. A few late pushes by Mary-Kate threatened our lead, but with 1 second left on the clock, the marvelous Sean Smailes managed to sneak one past The Wall to seal the victory.

Top 10 Goons Of Hockey In hockey, there are two types of bad boys. One is the cheap shot artist, shane churla RW, Dallas Stars. It will be interesting to see if the warmer http://home.uchicago.edu/~czap/Wango/goons.html
Extractions: "Fighting isn't always the solution to getting even with somebody. Sometimes it can be a big check. I can throw a hit and knock the wind out of an opponent, which proves that fighting is not always the solution." -Tie Domi In hockey, there are two types of bad boys. One is the cheap shot artist, someone like Ulf Samuelsson, who enjoys using his stick to cause serious injury and turns turtle at the first sign of trouble. Of course, the cheap shot artists are not respected and this is the way things should be. The other is that rare type of man, a man who has the thankless task of keeping his zone free of the offending opponent, heating up a lackluster game, and defending the weak. These men will not ever win a Hart or a Selke trophy, because they lack the flash and polish of a Mario Lemieux or a Doug Gilmour. Yet they carry themselves with their own special grace as they glide off to the box that they call home. Yes gentle reader, these men are: 1. Bob Probert- LW, Detroit Red Wings. "Probert, Probert, what a man; We see him, it's slam-bam. Let's go." -D. Cherry Amassing 292 penalty minutes over the course of 80 games last year, Probert took on all challengers and usually stood tall at the end. Probert can do more than fight, however, as he was the highest scorer among goons, scoring 43 points from his spot at left wing. 2. Marty McSorley- D, Pittsburgh Penguins. Although Probert is the better fighter, Marty has protected the biggest names in hockey (Wayne Gretzky last year, and Mario Lemieux this year) and led the league in penalty minutes last year with 399. Add to these achievements a 41 point season, and it is no wonder that the Penguins were willing to pay him over $1 million a season.

Extractions: Jon Waibel, a junior forward from Baudette, Minn., is one of those character guys who becomes a fan favorite for his work ethic, desire and ability to provide what coaches refer to as intangibles. Remember the old "NFL Today" show on CBS, when Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder used to pick winners based on weaknesses and strengths of the two combatants? Intangibles was one of the categories. Put a big check next to intangibles in Waibel's column.

Captain Mike Modano expects a close ratification vote when the NHL Players' Association gathers in Toronto on Wednesday and Thursday. Modano said the 24 percent rollback combined with the escrow account and salary cap have some players feeling like they've given up too much. Extractions: Ken Hitchcock's coffee hadn't even touched his lips yet when the woman accosted him outside the suburban strip mall Starbucks. Did she want to say hello? An autograph, perhaps? Or could she be one of the real die-hards, eager to tell him how he might do his job better? As it happened, the woman did want to critique his performance: her floor mats hadn't been vacuumed, and the exterior shine simply wasn't up to snuff. "She was giving me hell for not cleaning her car properly," Hitchcock, who at the time had been the head coach of the Dallas Stars for just a few months, recalls. "She thought I was the manager of the White Glove in Coppell there, next door. She gave it to me good." That was in 1996. "Now," Hitchcock notes, "I can't go anywhere." It's the price he pays for masterfully guiding the reins of what is currently Texas' most accomplished major professional sports team. Assuming, of course, that you think hockey is one of America's major professional sports.
