NHL players know sacrifice. They sacrifice their bodies to get to pucks; to create opportunities for teammates; and to stop opponents from scoring. They sacrifice summer vacation time to train for the upcoming season; they sacrifice favorite foods and entertainment opportunities to maintain condition; they sacrifice time with their families to pursue this sport that creates financial opportunities for those families. Perhaps they're used to sacrifice because so many saw the effort their folks made to give them this opportunity. Legion are the parents who got up early for games and practices; devoted weekends and weeknights to practices and games and worked second and third jobs to pay for club fees and travel.

JVP News - St. Louis Spirit Moves To Springfield for giving us the opportunity to come down here and be a part of a grass rootsprogram, said kelly chase, director of hockey operations for the club. http://www.ci.springfield.mo.us/jvp/news_team.html
Extractions: Article by Jack Wang, KY3 NEWS The Jordan Valley Ice Park will is now home to a junior amateur hockey team called The Springfield Spirit. The club formerly known as The St. Louis Sting has moved here. The Spirit is affiliated with the North American Hockey League , with players ages 16 to 20 years old. That league is a feeder program for players interested in getting scholarships at major colleges. The team has been in St. Louis for five years. We've worked extremely hard to try and be a part of this project here. We thank the city for giving us the opportunity to come down here and be a part of a grass roots program," said Kelly Chase, director of hockey operations for the club. The club should have a positive economic impact on the city. The popularity of public ice skating, added to the home games of The Spirit, will benefit area businesses. Several have noticed more customers lately. It was one of the goals of developing the ice rink. As this development grows, as more of the facilities within the development are put in place, it's just going to have a great effect on everything in the area," said Sonja Chasteen of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce.

2003 World Junior Hockey Championship Habscheid and kelly, like every player on their team, got an eyeful of That might make it seem like kelly had gone on something of a wild goose chase. http://www.canadianhockey.ca/e/teams/mens/junior/2003/news/fea033.html
Extractions: On Monday night, head coach Mark Habscheid and assistant Mike Kelly were also in attendance, but for them this was not recreation but rather preparation. Their interest was not casual but rather clinical. Canadian head coach Mark Habscheid called advance scouting "the homework" that is part of the coaches' lot at this tournament. Meanwhile assistant coach Mario Durocher was several hundred kilometres away in Sydney, winding up his advance work on the teams in Group A that Canada could face in cross-over play in the elimination round that begins on January 2 in Halifax. "Homework" is a fitting description: Toil that goes largely unseen but is necessary for passing on-ice tests. When the coaches are not on the ice with the players at practice or behind the bench during games, they’re either doing advance scouting at games, reviewing videotape of upcoming opponents, or meeting to discuss strategy. The world junior tournament is an intense couple of weeks for the players but maybe even more so for the coaches. Habscheid and Kelly, like every player on their team, got an eyeful of goaltender Kari Lehtonen, who turned aside 33 of the Czechs' 35 shots, many of them in spectacular fashion. But they also had a chance to see a Czech team that managed to more than hold its own against Finland which has two wins and a tie against Canada in the last two world junior tournaments.

Extractions: Wire mesh masks and hard-shell helmets hide the determined faces of a dozen youthful warriors frozen in positiona still life on a frigid, glassy oval. With the dropping of a rock-hard disc, the frenzied chase is on, with skates cutting tracks into the surface and hardwood sticks clattering together. Colorful uniforms bulging with body armor make the kids look tough, but youth hockey is a gentler version of the smash-mouth ice sport. These baby-faced athletes are learning the basics of this winter cousin of soccer and lacrosse along with sportsmanship and decorum, attributes largely absent from the grown-up version. But for this contest at the New York State Fair's Coliseum, astute fans of the game may find one important common thread: the name "Tretowicz" spanning the slight shoulders of the red-shirted No. 21. Six-year-old Adam Tretowicz is the son of his team's coach, Liverpool native Dave Tretowicz, who parlayed a talent for the sport honed in this same Midstate Youth Hockey Association into a scholarship playing for college powerhouse Clarkson, a spot on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team and a pro contract as a defenseman in the Los Angeles Kings organization. After recently moving his family from Pittsburgh back to Central New York, Tretowicz, now retired as a player, has come full circle as a coach of the Mite Division select squad in his old league, tutoring Adam and 12 other boys ages 6 to 8.
