His #99 was raised to the rafters, despite him never playing for the hometown Toronto Maple Leafs , as a show of his number's league-wide retirement. Extractions: Out of this World Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday February 07, 2000 02:12 AM AP TORONTO (AP) Three goals, two brothers, one special moment in an NHL All-Star game that, for a change, was something more than an unexciting shootout. Pavel Bure scored three goals, two set up by little brother Valeri, and goaltender Olaf Kolzig played a rare shutout period as the World team turned the 50th All-Star game into an uncommon rout, dominating North America 9-4 on Sunday. "That's why I got MVP, he set me up a lot," Pavel Bure said, nudging his little brother. The Bure brothers nearly connected for another goal in a four-goal World third period, but Valeri disobeyed big brother's instructions by passing up an open shot to try to feed Pavel again. "Younger brother never listens to older brother, you know how that is," said Valeri, who plays for Calgary and insists he would take less pay to play alongside Pavel in Florida. "I thought it would be even better if he got a fourth goal." Except for the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, the Bures have not played together since their days with the once-famous Red Army team. Valeri joined the Russian team at age 16, when Pavel already was a star.

Extractions: Coach Switch in Florida? So the Panthers fired assistant coaches Paul Baxter and George Kingston. That's not a big deal. Well maybe to them, but not to me. But look who they hired to replace them: Duane Sutter (fired as Florida's coach in 2001) and John Tochetti. It seems to me that by hiring an experienced head coach and an experienced minor league coach (Tochetti), that Florida is maybe getting ready to either fire current coach Mike Keenan or let him go to the Rangers, where he won the Stanley Cup, in return for something good. I've been wrong before, though. Posted by Steven Ovadia on Friday, March 07, 2003, 07:26 AM Full Bench OK. Maybe it says a little too much about me, but isn't it amazing that Florida Panther Valeri Bure is married to Candace Cameron (formerly of FULL HOUSE )? I just read that in this week's Hockey News and it blew my mind.

Extractions: At eighteen, Pavel Bure was already a star with the Central Red Army team and was asked to sign on for three more years. Bure decided instead to follow a number of other stars from the Red Army Team to the NHL. In 1991, Bure signed with the Vancouver Canucks. His star rose rapidly: Dubbed the "Russian Rocket," Bure put together two stellar 60-goal/100 point seasons. As early as 1993, however, Bure was mentioned in reports of NHL players being extorted by Russian organized crime. Later, Bure was linked as a friend and business associate of Anzor Kikalishvili, the head of the 21st Century Association, a sports/entertainment marketing company that law enforcement officials believe is a front for illegal activities. Bure is beginning his eighth NHL season, now playing for the Florida Panthers. (read his interview) Valeri Kamensky grew up in Voskresensk, Russia a small town some fifty miles from Moscow which has produced some of the nation's best hockey players. In 1991, Kamensky became the second player from Voskresensk to make the move to the NHL, landing with the Quebec Nordiques. Kamensky reportedly played a key role in helping a reputed Russian mobster, Vyacheslav Sliva, enter Canada in 1994. Kamensky is said to have prevailed upon Quebec Nordique officials to officially request a visa for Sliva, whose criminal background could potentially have blocked his travel. In their letter of reference, the Nordiques claimed that Sliva "is a friend of one of our players." Kamensky starred for several years with the Colorado Avalanche, the name of the relocated Nordique franchise, helping the Avalanche to a Stanley Cup. In July, 1999, Kamensky signed a rich four-year $17 million contract to play for the New York Rangers.

Extractions: Hope Bright, widow of former Cleveland Barons President Paul L. Bright, made a large and extensive donation to the Hockey Hall of Fame in memory of her late husband. Included were two extremely rare and significant artifacts from the Barons 1964 AHL Calder Cup championship season; Mr. Brights miniature Calder Cup trophy, along with the championship banner that used to hang in the Cleveland Arena. Also donated were autographed sticks from Guy Lafleur and the old Toledo Hornets of the IHL, various pucks, patches, pennants, programs and individual/team photos. All items are important pieces in preserving the history of the American and International Hockey Leagues. Back to Acquisitions List FEATURE ACQUISITIONS When International Hockey League legend Len Thornson retired following a 13-year career in 1969, most thought his record for career points was a safe bet to never be broken. Through NHL expansion and other minor pro leagues popping up, Thornsons total of 1,382 in his career was well ahead of his nearest competitor. That all changed during the 1999-2000 season. Jock Callander of the Cleveland Lumberjacks, playing in his 16 th IHL season was only 16 points behind Thornson. On February 21, 2000, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Callander recorded an assist on a Chris Longo goal, earning career point #1,383 and a place in IHL history. The Hall of Fame recognizing the acheivement made the trip to Cleveland for Jock Callander night and were presented by Jock with his jersey, stick, socks and gloves from the record-breaking games.
