Mason is tough, just like his idol "Eddie the Eagle." Three months after being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, the young athlete was back in school. What showed his tenacity even more was that after weekends of treatments, Mason would leave the hospital to join his hockey team the same day. experience. Even without their starting goalie, the Stars managed to handle the visiting Sharks, 4-1.

Extractions: The 1983 NHL Entry Draft loomed large for a promising young goaltender. Thoughts of playing in the NHL were dancing in his head. Instead, he was passed over like parsley on a Denny's dinner platter. The goaltender then went to college, put up some sharp numbers, and was signed as a free agent by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1987. Yet it wasn't until that Crazy Eddie Belfour would see his first full season in the National Hockey League. Belfour gave a good account of himself that first season, winning the Vezina honours and being named Rookie of the Year with a 43-19-7 record and a decent enough 2.47 GAA. In his second season, Belfour would play 52 games, helping, along with Dominik Hasek, guide the Hawks to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they would lose to the Mario Lemieux and his Pittsburgh Penguins. Belfour would repeat as Vezina Trophy winner in , with a 41-18-11 mark and a 2.59 GAA. Oddly enough, in later years Belfour would post much better numbers, only to be snubbed by the interests.
