Extractions: [ All sponsors and partners ] round 2 review: Giving thanks for exciting chess – While the rest of the country was sitting down to turkey, gravy, and football, the players of the US Chessmaster Championship were battling hard. Even with the prospect of a Thanksgiving banquet awaiting the players, of the 32 games only two fell into the category of what we call "Grandmaster draws." That is, short games that are agreed drawn without a fight. Those four players are going to find it hard to get back in the running for the [ $5,000 Bent Larsen Prize ] for fighting chess that is up for grabs this year. Leading the way were two legends of the US Championship and US chess. GMs Walter Browne and Larry Christiansen have nine US titles between them. That's six for Browne and three for Big Larry. They played each other for the first time in 1972, when Browne was 23 and Christiansen was a tender 16. Almost half the field wasn't even born when that game was played!

Extractions: Get a seven day FREE trial of ICC! Numerous games of Irina Krush have been published lately, in addition to her own release of a two-volume set of videos from the Chess Superstore, entitled "Krushing Attacks". In this article, GM Vaska brings us a recent effort by rising star Patrick Hummel. Lots of recent attention has been focused on the spectacular rise of 15-year old 1998 US Women's Champion Irina Krush. She is by far the most promising female talent the United States has ever produced. She could well go on to become a GM (not to mention WGM). In the area of young American boys showing world-class potential there hasn't been much to write aboutuntil very recently. 15-year old Patrick Hummel of Las Vegas, fresh from winning the 1999 National High School Championship at age 14 (only future GMs Michael Rohde and Larry Christiansen have matched this feat at such an age) went on to earn an International Master norm at the Continental Chess Assoc. "Chesswise International Open" held June June 12-17 in Stratton Woods, Vermont.

Extractions: US Women's Champ Irina Krush vs. GM Ftacnik! Live from IM Kopec's Chess Camp, US Women's Champion Irina Krush will play a four game match against Grandmaster Lubomir Ftacnik on July 14 and 15. The games will be broadcast live onto the Internet Chess Club for members to watch. There will be two games each day, with a 25 20 time control, starting at 1pm ICC time (5pm GMT). Here is information from the organizers: Many of you may have heard of the "Krush Challenge Series" of matches. U.S. Women's Champion Irina Krush, who is just 15 years old, has played a series of training matches against such notable players as GM's Arthur Bisguier, Walter Browne and Tal Shaked. Now she meets her toughest challenge yet, GM Lubomir Ftacnik, who has a FIDE rating of 2585. The event is sponsored by SmartChess, operators of the World Wide Web Chess Superstore, which may be found at http://www.smartchess.com/SmartChessOnline/default.htm

Extractions: www.newyorkmasters.com Week 42 marked the first wildcard week of the NY Masters. In the wildcard week, one player under 18 years old, rated 2000-2200 is eligible to play in the event. This player is in turn sponsored by a company, which matches his or her $30 entry fee. Thus the presence of this player increases the prize fund by $60. Also in the first round, the wildcards game will be shown on ICC. This week the SmartChess.com wildcard player was Maxsim Grinman, 17 years old and rated 2130. There will be a wildcard in every 10th event, thus meaning every event that ends in 2, such as the 42nd, 52nd, 62nd and I think you can all see the pattern. We had one new player this week, in Canadian National Champion, IM Pascal Charbonneau. He has been promising to join the fray for a while now, and has scheduled his classes this semester to make it a more likely occurance. Also this week we had the entire Shahade family in the tournament, for the first time in many months. The omens were not good when all three of us were given the black pieces in the first round.

Extractions: www.newyorkmasters.com There was a lot of chess action in NYC this Tuesday. I left the Kasparov Deep Junior match about one hour before its conclusion to setup this weeks NY Masters. I even took 2 entries at the Kasparov match! Next Tuesday there will be a NY Masters, but Kasparov and the computer have a rest day, perhaps some of the strong players who are hanging around at the match will come by the Marshall to test their skills! Also the NY Masters is running its first ever Round Robin tournament at a slow time control. The field will include 10 players with an average FIDE rating of 2203, with one game being played each Monday night beginning next Monday evening. This is hopefully just the start to more tournaments like this in the future! The webpage for this event is http://www.newyorkmasters.com/1stintl.html

2001-02 - Hastings Intl Chess Congress irina krush did something new to me. She rushed to her game, played her first move A rest day on 1 January would probably have led to brighter chess. http://www.hastingschess.org.uk/2002/commentary.htm
Extractions: I suppose Joe Gallagher thought there was little to play for, but an 8 move draw was most disappointing. There are only 45 games and this meant 2% of the tournament was non-chess. The draw between Mark Hebden and Pentala Harikrishna was a fair one. The other three games went somewhat longer. Krishnan said he was winning but went wrong on the 34th move when he should have guarded against a sharp check which he overlooked. Peter Wells nearly went wrong in the first time scramble against Nicholas Pert. However, all it meant was that the game was prolonged. Irina provided us with the longest game of the whole congress. She was once again ground down in the endgame due to an accretion of small advantages. That game continued even beyond the bishop, knight and king against bare king endgame between Irina Tetenkina and Wu Li. The lad defended, she found the win, but too slowly. He claimed a win by the 50 move rule when she had mate in one. CHALLENGERS Thus the Macedonian gained a grandmaster norm. Heather Richards won with Black in the last round against Ed Formanek (USA) who first started playing in the Challengers in about 1970, although it is many years since he played here. Thus Heather secured her final woman international master result, over-scoring the requirement substantially.

Among the three winners, Harikrishna's performance was the best as the 15-year-old stands to gain more than 20 ELO points. The last round action went on expected lines as Harikrishna drew comfortably against Hebden and top seed GM Zhang Zhong of China putting up stiff resistance to hold Sasikiran in a marathon game. That gave Barsov a chance to catch up with the Indian duo and he played enterprisingly to win a topsy-turvy game against bottom placed IM Irina Krush of United States to share the first prize. The fifth and sixth positions went to Zhong and GM Petr Kiriakov of Russia respectively who finished with 4.5 points while GM Joe Gallagher of Switzerland finished seventh on four points.

Perspective, Harvard-Radcliffe's Liberal Monthly In Mainz, Germany, two young chess prodigies played last August under the glare like Elisabeth Paehtz and irina krush who simply want to play the game. http://www.digitas.harvard.edu/~perspy/issues/2002/oct/patrick.html
Extractions: by Rabia Belt By Patrick Taylor Smith In Mainz, Germany, two young chess prodigies played last August under the glare of a media frenzy. They played an attack-oriented style of chess involving exciting tactics and vicious attacks. But that is not why the regular media took interest. Nor is the fact that these teenage prodigies represent role models for the next generation of young chess players the reason for the unusually high level of media coverage. Rather, the extraordinary characteristic of these players is completely unrelated to the game. Elisabeth Paehtz and Alexandra Kosteniuk are female chess players, but more importantly, they are attractive female chess players. LOLITA CHESS THE POLGAR EXPLOSION It was not always thus. Women players were not always sex objects, tools to sell tickets. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean women were treated better: chess history is full of discrimination against women. Chess champions from Bobby Fischer to Garry Kasparov (not Max Euwe, who was the first world champion to lose to a woman) have expressed contempt for women's ability to use the higher order thinking required of high level chess play. In fact, this belief has been so widespread in the chess world that even women players accept it. Sasha Kosteniuk, in an interview, said, men are more industrious and less emotional than women and that, consequently, women would never achieve parity with men in chess.

Extractions: In normal group chess, a large number of games are played independently on tables set up next to each other. On one side of the table, individual players contemplate each move; on the other side, one extremely strong player walks from table to table and quickly makes his or her moves. In the variant I'm proposing, the game starts out with just one table and one game; on one side, all the minor players discuss their next move as a group. Different next moves are proposed and discussed; finally, the group splits into as many subgroups as different solutions are settled on; new tables are set up on which the remaining game after the move that led to this table are played out, now by the smaller group of this particular move's supporters. In response to centauri's annotation I think players that have ended their game should *not* reenter other games in the same tree. The idea is to group players with similar strategies or interests together and form strong teams; if the losers from other branches could come back into ones they didn't agree with, the spread would be more statistical than strategic, and the game less interesting. (But maybe both versions work in practice; there's no reason not to try this.)
