Extractions: F ANTASY B ASKETBALL S TATISTICS October 7, 1998 A typical fantasy basketball league has 12 teams with 10 starting players on each team. To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Hang with me now ... the goal will be to determine who the fantasy basketball studs are ... not to put you to sleep! CATEGORY AVG PER GAME STND DEV STND DEV/AVG Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Treys Free Throws FG% In the same manner the fantasy stiffs can be identified. Calbert Cheany and Joe Smith managed to be in the top 120 in minutes played per game but were below average in all 8 of the categories investigated. By the way OnHoops.com readers, LJ was below average in 6 of the 8 categories! That's kind of stiff too.

Extractions: As a virtual native of Atlanta I have some serious concerns about the state of sports in the city, especially professional basketball, specifically regarding the changes within the Atlanta Hawks organization. Long gone are the days of "The Human Highlight Film" (Dominique Wilkins), the jaw dropping vertical ability of Spud Webb, and the dominating on-court presence of a Moses Malone. Now fans are greeted with a different type of entertainment and consistency, but unfortunately not quite what we are thirsting for from our home team. Every organization encounters periods of supremacy as well as inferiority in terms of competitiveness and overall skill. However, the Atlanta Hawks organization has seemingly had a cruel joke by father time cast upon them, whereas they are continually stuck in the downturn of what should be an ebb and flow life cycle. Is it a matter of poor management from the front office where the appropriate players are not being lured to Atlanta to take the team out of this slump? Has Atlanta become the graveyard of the league where players past their prime, but unwilling to throw in the towel, seek to "revive" their careers (Kevin Willis and Kenny Anderson 32 years combined professional experience)? Sure the likes of Anderson (PG), Willis (C), Antoine Walker (PF) and Brent Barry (G) were brought in to create "excitement" through veteran leadership with the team and assist in cultivating the rookie class, but how productive has that been and how practical was it to begin with? By the time Barry got an opportunity to don an Atlanta uniform he was shipped out, no disrespect to Tyronn Lue, and Anderson was once again plagued by injuries and placed on the injured list, while boasting a thundering 5.0 ppg and 2.6 apg average. Age was never in favor of Willis to begin with, so expectations truly could not have been high. Its wonderful to reunite with a former Georgia Tech star and a legendary former Hawk, but are the fans thirsting to reminisce or to see success through strong rookie/veteran acquisitions? Is there simply a misunderstanding of what it takes to create a high caliber sports team in the city where fan support is about as loyal as oil is to water?

Recruiting BEREA, OHIO Former Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball standout Willis Brown will return to Berea as a graduate assistant basketball coach with veteran mentor Steve Bankson and the Yellow Jacket program. Brown has spent the past three and a half seasons as the head basketball coach at Lakeland Community College in Mentor. "We are pleased to welcome Willis back to Baldwin-Wallace College and as a member of our coaching staff," said Bankson, who is the winningest basketball coach in B-W history. Willis was an outstanding player at B-W," said Bankson. "He was a team leader both on and off the floor, earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors twice and was among the OAC's leading rebounders for three years. He always played with great intensity. In addition, Willis was a team captain and a good role model for our younger players.

Store ABOUT US Express-News KENS 5 MySanAntonio.com Corrections San Antonio Express-News When the Spurs opted to part company with 42-year-old center Kevin Willis this summer, an opening was created on the 2004-05 roster for a specific type of player: A savvy, veteran big man hungry for a championship ring after a long career without one. Compared to Willis, 37-year-old Tony Massenburg is a fresh-faced youth. Massenburg returns to the Spurs, for whom he began his NBA career, after a season in Sacramento that was productive, but frustrating. When the Spurs meet the Phoenix Suns in their preseason home opener at the SBC Center tonight, he will be playing his first game in San Antonio in Spurs silver and black since 1991.
