It's free! Save it. MUCH WAS WRITTEN last season about Wang Zhizhi, a seven-footer who in April 2001 became the first Chinese basketball player to play in the NBA when he joined the Dallas Mavericks. More than a half century ago, however, Wataru "Wat" Misaka, a 5'7" Japanese-American guard, made history by becoming the first Asian to play professional basketball. Although the National Basketball League, one of two forerunners to the NBA, had integrated with African-American players in 1942, Misaka's arrival in 1947 marked the first time that a person of color had played in the Basketball Association of America. In 1949-50, the NBL and the BAA merged to form the NBA. Misaka's arrival predated the NBA's integration in 1950-51 and occurred mere months after Jackie Robinson broke baseball's longstanding color barrier.
Extractions: At 7 foot, 1 inch, China's slender basketball prodigy, Wang Zhizhi, has all the tools. He runs and shoots like a small guard, while rebounding and shot-blocking like the behemoth he is. But at only 18, Wang is also proving that potential may be the most damning of prophecies. He was first sighted at 16 on the Chinese national team that eventually won the Asian Basketball Confederation championship. Since then, he has helped the Chinese national team qualify for the Olympics. In his first year of professional basketball, his club, which at the time was called August 1 and based in Shanghai, went a perfect 25 and and won the Chinese National Basketball League title. Wang was also the most valuable player as China captured the Asian junior championship shortly after the Olympics.

Chinese Wang Zhizhi to Join Dallas Mavericks Chinese giant center Wang Zhizhi will become the first Asian and first army officer to join Dallas Mavericks, his military-owned club Bayi Rockets and Chinese Basketball Management Center (CBMC) announced Thursday. "This is more than just a basketball player going into the NBA," Mavericks' assistant coach Donnie Nelson said in the press conference of the day. "In my opinion, Wang Zhizhi is a synonymous representative of the spirit of China." Nelson said Wang, 2.13 meters, who was picked by Mavericks at 36th in the second round in 1999, would have a universal contract as any second-round picked player has. According to the collective bargain agreement, Wang will have the lowest-salary two-year contract with US$300,000 in the first year, and more than US$420,000 in the next year. The 23-year-old Wang might play as No.16 in his first NBA game as early as on April 5 when the Mavericks face Atlanta Hawks at home, Nelson said. He is likely to play a backup to forward Dirk Nowitzki. After two years of long and hard negotiation with Bayi and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China, Mavericks finally ironed things straight for Wang, whose military rank is Fu Tuan, or Lieutenant in the US army.

At a press conference Thursday morning here, the 7-foot Wang wrapped up a deal with the Mavericks and his Chinese army team that allows him to leave. The final hurdle in the two-year-long negotiations, spearheaded by Mavericks assistant coach Donn Nelson, was cleared when the NBA OK'd Dallas to sign Wang despite the fact that he must remain an active member of the Chinese army and could be recalled for military duty at any time. "I want to teach the American people more about us," said Wang. "The NBA is the best in the world. I want to be with the best." Said Michael Denzel of NBA International: "This is another step in the growing friendship between the NBA and the CBA (Chinese Basketball Association) and between China and the U.S."

Hessler spoke to Ben Greenman about Yao, basketball, and the culture of sports in China. PETER HESSLER: Yao is the most famous Chinese athlete ever. There are, of course, extremely remote areas where people haven't heard of him. But, increasingly, Chinese have access to television, regardless of whether they live in the city or in the country, and if they have a television, then they will have seen Yao Ming. In northern China, on the loess plateau, there are people living in caves who not only have heard of Yao but watch him regularly on their televisions. As far as recognition and interest, Yao is breaking new ground in this country. He's the first Chinese athlete to gain his greatest fame in something other than a national-team jersey. It's a key step toward making Chinese sports international. Do they know how famous he is in the U.S.?

China is the meatiest market and mainlanders are already mad for Showtime. By Ron Gluckman/Beijing C LYDE 'THE GLIDE' DREXLER nabs the ball from an opponent, flicks it to a teammate, then races up court for the return pass. He leaps high and glides to the hoop for a lay-up. Dream Teamer Drexler has made the same sort of play hundreds of times. But never upon this court, nor in this country. This time the basketball legend is putting his moves on Middle Kingdom, to the delight of a fervent crowd of fans in the Chinese capital. Drexler, one of the NBA's 50 greatest all-time players, with more than 20,000 points under his belt, appeared with the NBA Legends before 10,000 screaming fans at Beijing's Workers' Stadium in August, before continuing on a tri-city ten day tour of China that ended in Shanghai a week a later. It was not a make or break tournament game, but a potential marketing play for the NBA that brought Drexler, a Portland Trailblazers All Star and champion with the Houston Rockets to Beijing.
