Extractions: Basketball Digest , Feb, 2002 by Reggie Theus NICK VAN EXEL AND STEPHON Marbury both have broken out big with the 2001-02 season now rolling. The Denver Nuggets lost Antonio McDyess to injury and Van Exel is stepping up big to become one of the league's top scorers. Last season, Marbury, playing with the Stephonairesuh, I mean the New Jersey Netswas the only player to rank in the top 10 in points (23.9, 10th) and assists (7.6, 8th). Now he has a new home in Phoenix with the Suns, and even with big weapons in the lineup like Penny Hardaway and Shawn Marion, Marbury is still getting his numbers. What we have here is a matchup of killer rep (Marbury) vs. solid performance (Van Exel). I love Marbury's game. Van Exel grew up in Kenosha, Wis., learning to play the game fight and watching me, when I played for the Chicago Bulls. It looks like a tight matchup; let's see how it wrangles out.

Maybe i missed something, but in the playoff games that I saw, Nick came through big time for the Mavs when Nash choked. Not to take away from the player that Nash has become with the Suns, but he is a different Steve Nash from the one that made the playoffs with Dallas. Imagine Nick backing Jason Terry and having Howard and Stackhouse along with others. That could very well be the missing key to a Mavs championship. That along with Dirk learning to play defense and contributing in the middle like most 7 footers in the league!!!.

USBL InsideHoops NBA [ HOME Aug 19, 2003 The trade is now official The Golden State Warriors have acquired guards Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson and Antoine Rigaudeau, forward Popeye Jones and center Evan Eschmeyer from the Dallas Mavericks in a nine-player trade, general manager Garry St. Jean announced today. In return, the Warriors sent forwards Antawn Jamison, Danny Fortson and Chris Mills, along with guard Jiri Welsh, to the Mavericks. "We're extremely excited about this deal and feel that it is advantageous for our franchise in several aspects," said St. Jean. "In the short term, we have added talented players to our roster, while also providing an opportunity for some of our younger players to step up and play larger roles in our overall development. Additionally, in the long term, this trade will provide us with some flexibility that we may not otherwise have had." Van Exel, a 10-year NBA veteran, has averaged 15.5 points, 7.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 723 regular season games during his career, seeing action with the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets and Mavericks. In 64 career playoff games, the 6-1 guard has averaged 15.7 points, 5.1 assists and 3.3 rebounds, including this past postseason in which he averaged 19.5 points in 20 playoff contests as Dallas advanced to the Conference Finals. An All-Star selection in 1997-98, Van Exel has finished in the NBA's top-15 in assists in eight of his 10 seasons, while finishing in the top-25 in assist-to-turnover ratio in each of the last seven campaigns.

Extractions: TRAIL BLAZERS WAIVE GUARD DEREK ANDERSON Portland, OR - The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that the club has waived Guard Derek Anderson. Anderson will be designated as the team's amnesty player under the luxury tax amnesty provision of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. The provision allows a team to release a player and remove his contract amount from the team's salary cap for purposes of calculating the luxury tax. The Trail Blazers will be responsible for the remaining two years of Anderson's contract and he is free to sign with another team. "We thank Derek for his contributions on and off the court while he was in Portland," said Trail Blazers General Manager John Nash. "Given the direction of the team and Derek's limited availability in recent years we felt this was the best solution for all parties. This move gives us additional cap flexibility and minutes for our younger players. We wish him well in the future." During the 2004-2005 season Anderson saw action in only eight of the team's final 42 games due to various injuries, including a sinus ailment, dental problems and back spasms. An eight-year NBA veteran, he played in 47 games with 32 starts for the Trail Blazers last season and averaged 9.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 26.4 minutes per game. In the 2003-2004 season Anderson appeared in 51 games, 45 in the starting line up. He averaged 13.6 points, 4.5 assists, 3.6 rebounds, 1.29 steals and 35.5 minutes. He had limited action that season due to a herniated disk.
Extractions: Anderson heads a long list NBA players to possibly wear the title of amnesty player, noted for players waived as a one-time selection by teams attempting to avoid costly luxury tax penalties. Other notable players such as Michael Finely of the Dallas Mavericks, Raef LaFrentz of the Boston Celtics, the Indiana Pacers Austin Croshere, Brian Grant of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Allen Houston of the New York Knicks, (whom the clause was loosely named after), are also likely to be waived in the next few days.
