Extractions: Basketball Digest , April, 2003 by Reggie Theus NO, IT'S NOT A NEW TREND, international players making a mark in the NBA. But it's a refreshing one. Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks and Predrag Stojakovic of the Sacramento Kings are skilled in the ways that older generations of basketball players were skilled: ball-handling, passing, cutting, and shooting. Today, those skills are somewhat of a lost art. I played in Europe, if there's one thing all European players can do, it's shoot the ball. That's their expertise. Now, the majority of European players are not fond of playing defense; that's not their expertise.

Next > Reebok Signs Sacremento Standout Predrag Stojakovic Canton, MA (November 13, 2003) - Today, Reebok announces it has signed a multi-year endorsement agreement with Sacramento Kings' phenom Predrag "Peja" Stojakovic. Widely considered one of the best shooters in the league, Stojakovic is the reigning "NBA All-Star 3 Point Shoot-Out" champion for 2003 and 2002. The 6'9, 26-year-old native of Belgrade, Serbia-Montenegro will wear Reebok's NBA Mad Talent II on-court. Hitting retail on February 1st, the shoe will be available for a suggested retail price of $75. Stojakovic will also play an integral part in basketball marketing campaigns leading up to the 2004 Summer Games in Athens. Stojakovic's strong performance as a starting forward for the Kings earned him a spot on the Western Conference team in the 2003 and 2002 NBA All-Star Games. Prior to becoming the Kings' first-round draft pick on June 15, 1998, Stojakovic played professionally for three seasons in Greece. His sure shot from the perimeter has helped establish the Kings as a Western Conference powerhouse, and Stojakovic has been recognized by the NBA's general managers as the third-best international player in the league, following Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets and Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks. "We are very excited to work with an international basketball icon such as Peja," said John Lynch, vice president of Reebok sports marketing. "He will be a tremendous global endorsee for Reebok's co-branded NBA footwear, helping to drive home our position as a major force in authentic performance sports around the world."

Stojakovic, of the Sacramento Kings , said he was too tired after the long NBA season to play in the 16-nation tournament in Serbia-Montenegro from Sept. 15-24, coach Zeljko Obradovic said Friday. "We are talking about a special player, the one who would mean a lot to us," Obradovic said. "Anyhow, I wish him a lot of luck in his career." Extractions: AP SYDNEY, Australia (AP) Andrew Gaze is making his fifth Olympics his best. Gaze scored 13 of Australia's last 15 points Thursday to lead the host country into the semifinals of the men's basketball tournament with a 65-62 victory over Italy. The 35-year-old guard is the second-leading scorer in Olympic history to Oscar Schmidt of Brazil. None of the 757 points have been any bigger than the ones down the stretch against Italy, as Australia's hopes for a gold medal stayed alive despite losing a 10-point lead midway through the second half. "We still have a couple more to go but we're really where we want to be right now," said Gaze, who had 27 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 4 for 5 from 3-point range. The last two of those 3-pointers started his game closing run to keep Australia either in front or within a basket. His three-point play when he scored on a flip shot down low brought Australia within 60-59 with 2:09 left. He made two free throws with 1:38 left to make it 62-61.
