Extractions: Login From Ball In #2, Fall 1996 Growing up in Iowa, I had no home team in the NBA. My first allegiance was to the Los Angeles Lakers. I was 9, and the 71-72 Lakers were on a tear through the league the likes of which wouldnt be seen until 20 years later with Michael Jordans Bulls. That Lakers team had everything that would appeal to a little boy: Happy Hairston and Gail Goodrich, two Hall-of-Famers with alliteration names; a talented giant (and best player ever?), Wilt Chamberlain; and a hick, clutch-player with a big nose, Jerry West. They even had a nemesis: The Knicks! The early 70s was the last time that the Knicks won an NBA title. They had their share of all-time great players and personalities Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, Phil Jackson (yes, Phil Jackson) and a philosophy that emphasized defense and teamwork. More importantly, they contested my TV heroes, the Lakers, for the leagues top honors. Maybe the best thing about hating the Knicks then and loving them now is that I can despise Phil Jackson twice . I dont remember if Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant found their games again, or if Michael Jordan stayed out of the casinos and scored a thousand points in the next 3 games, but the Bulls won that 92 series. Well, the Crusaders won most of the time, too.

He'd see Magic Johnson and Larry Bird fuel their legends on pro basketball's ultimate stage and picture himself going up against Patrick Ewing in the same venue. That fantasy became reality in June 1994, when Olajuwon's Houston Rockets and Ewing's New York Knicks met for the NBA championship. One of the two 7-footers would capture his first NBA title alter nearly a decade in the league.

Washington DC document.getElementById(base + curr).style.display= ""; A fourteen year veteran of the NBA, John Starks was the point guard for the New York Knicks during the 1990-1998 seasons, giving sports fans many unforgettable moments, especially in Eastern Conference playoffs with the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers in the middle of his New York career. Gothamist got to ask him a few questions as he has returned to Madison Square Garden as the New York Knicks' Alumni and Fan Development Adviser First things first, what does it mean to be an "Alumni and Fan Development Advisor"? Are you in charge of making sure that fans like Spike Lee and Woody Allen are kept in line? Honesty. They are very honest about how they feel about you. They don't "put on no front," you know? If you're out there not doing your job, they're going to let you know you're not doing your job. Unlike in other arenas, where they might clap and try to pull you up, New York fans are very honest about how you're doing out there on the court. What is your favorite memory of playing in the Garden?
