The last one, when he made himself into a player deemed worthy of Olympic stature, the coach who worked with him on a daily basis was assistant Mark Osowski. Yesterday, while getting ready for today's game vs. Spain, Boozer took time to reflect on the Leominster-reared Osowski, who died Sunday of pancreatitis at 41. ADVERTISEMENT "My relationship with Mark Osowski was great," a saddened Boozer said following practice at the American College of Greece. "He was our big man's coach and I worked with him day and night for a whole season. And even more in the summertime. It's really unfortunate. It's tragic." Osowski was well known in the close-knit coaching fraternity, having also worked in Charlotte and Golden State. He arrived in Cleveland with Paul Silas, who coached the Cavaliers last season. Also arriving in Cleveland last year was one LeBron James. "He was a really good guy," James said of Osowski. "He never showed that there was anything wrong with him and I never had any idea. I never even knew he was ill. I can't believe that he is gone. I really don't know what to say."

Extractions: Red Sox Patriots Celtics Bruins ... Sports By Chris Sheridan, AP Basketball Writer, 12/25/2003 LeBron James arrived and Michael Jordan retired (again). John Stockton and David Robinson also called it quits. Tim Duncan won a championship and Karl Malone left Utah in search of one. But it was Kobe Bryant who generated the most headlines after he was accused of rape. ADVERTISEMENT What a year it was in the NBA, both on and off the court. Only 12 months ago the following not only seemed possible, but probable: The Lakers would win their fourth straight title. Malone would never leave Utah. Jordan would go down in history as a beloved teammate. Bryant would be the most marketable player in the league for years to come. Larry Brown and Allen Iverson would grow old together. Well, maybe not everyone was so certain about that last one. But 2003 was still full of surprises and changes from how NBA players are perceived to where they play. No event shattered people's perceptions as much as the news in early July that Bryant the player who had taken over the mantle from Jordan as the NBA's most beloved and mass-marketable face had been accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old hotel employee in Eagle, Colo. The reaction of former NBA player Gary Grant was typical.

While many professional teams preach the importance of the long ball, Virginia baseball coach Brian O'Connor focuses on the traditional style of offense. Sacrifice bunts, double steals and hit-and-runs are common occurrences on the base paths at Davenport Field. "We've been labeled a small-ball team since I got here," O'Connor said. Extractions: James is being touted as the next superstar of the NBA LeBron James is on his way to the NBA, with more hype and higher expectations than any first-year player before him. He is expected to be the saviour of the beleaguered Cleveland Cavaliers franchise (who will select James with the first pick of the NBA draft on 26 June). And in a larger sense, he could be the saviour of the NBA itself, carrying the league into the post-Michael Jordan era. Is it too much to ask of an 18-year-old who has just graduated from high school? The fact remains no player - not Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, nor Tracy McGrady - has come out of high school and been an immediately productive player. It has taken at least a year or two for each of those players to develop.

Do a good job on him, and Howard can take a step toward being known as a defensive stopper. He didn't do a lot of stopping in the loss to Sacramento. Peja Stojakovic scorched the Mavericks for 38 points as Howard picked up five fouls trying to slow him down. "When Josh gets in foul trouble, two things happen," coach Avery Johnson said. "He's on the bench, and when he comes back into the game, it seems to take away from his aggressiveness. He's got to learn to manage those situations." That doesn't mean he can manage James. Richard Hamilton scored 21 points and the Detroit Pistons held Cleveland to a six-point third quarter and almost held James scoreless in the second half in an 81-69 win Thursday night. James finished with a season-low 11 points on 4-of-21 shooting, eight rebounds and seven assists. "I missed a lot of shots that I'm normally going to make, but they were playing really tough defense against me," said James, who scored a career-low four points last year as a rookie. "Every time I came off a screen, they doubled me." After making a fadeaway jumper over Ben Wallace at the end of the first half, James didn't score again until there was 2:12 left in the game.

Extractions: "You could kind of tell the way the air was, how things were going around here, there was going to have to be a change," said LeBron James. "I didn't know it was going to be this soon." And with that, Paul Silas coaching tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers ended. Although overall it appeared Silas has done a good job with the Cavs, who were leading the division most of the first half of the season, this is a what have you done lately world and ever since the All-Star break, Silas and Cleveland has been struggling. Losing nine of your last 12 will get many of coaches fired, especially when you have talent such as James and fellow All-Star Zydrunas Ilgauskas on the floor but the reason for the move by new owner Dan Gilbert is deeper than that. Ever since the short time prior to the trade deadline and the ownership change being official - Cleveland has been a mess. The swagger they had, especially at home, for most of the season had been replaced by the air of uncertainty. Was it Silas' fault? No. But he didn't endear himself to the new ownership by playing the veterans over the young guys, expressing his feelings about Carlos Boozer in front of the media, and most importantly not winning. However, even if we would have did all that for the rest of the season, barring a deep playoff run he likely was gone anyway. "We felt that if we didn't make this decision that we were jeopardizing our ability to be a playoff team this year," Cavs now GM Jim Paxson said. "We're 64 games into the season and we still don't have a consistent rotation, substitution pattern, those type of things. We didn't see that changing."

He went on to the NBA for a 16-year career that included three championships and two All-Star titles. Silas played for the Boston Celtics, the Denver Nuggets and the Seattle Supersonics during that span. Because when motivated, he is supremely athletic, soaring through the air to block shots and dunk with the greatest of ease. Thats what happened in Seattle, as Miles was everything you could hope for in a finisher of the fast break. He beat everyone down the floor, received good passes from the likes of LeBron James, and it was Wham, with the right hand! as longtime Cavs radio play-by-play announcer Joe Tait likes to say. Still, while Miles spent a lot of time working on his shot during the off season, Cavs coach Paul Silas has to cringe every time he shoots from beyond 12 feet. Besides rookie forward Jason Kapono (a defensive liability), Cleveland has no consistent perimeter shooters and I mean NONE. Basically, the Cavs still need to make major changes if they hope to get to the playoffs anytime soon. The bottom line for this team is James needs a reliable running mate. There have been persistent rumors of a Cleveland-Dallas trade that would send center Zydrunas Ilgauskus to the Mavericks for forward Antawn Jamison. My thought: Do it, Cavs!
