But in the end it wasn't enough. On the bright side, at least Silas got a good shot in on Carlos Boozer before he left. Whether it was appropriate or not is irrelevant on TPG. The bottom line is, after what Boozer did to the Cavs, it was true. Paul Silas called it like he saw it. He dug deep into the PFunk archives for an description of his former player Carlos Boozer. And no I don't mean that Silas called him "Star Child". Either dig deep into your Parliament Funkadelic knowledge base or just read this . First Silas was fined 10 grand and now he has been shown the door . The Cavs website announces that assistant coach Brendan Malone will serve as the head coach. Why does Paul Silas get the shaft every place he coaches? Paul Silas has all the qualities of the great coaches, Jackson, Riley, Brown, except for one thing, the rings. Like those coaches, he demands respect and he demands effort. But without the rings, he gets neither from the front office or most of his players. It is a catch 22 indeed, but one that Silas has been unfortunately saddled with for the past decade. Without that one championship, the problems between coach and management, as well as coach and a few players, became enough to let him go. Don't think for a second that it was only predicated only on the Cavs recent skid.

Originally, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced that the 1955 Pan American Games team would consist of five AAU players, four college players and five players from the Armed Forces. But because of the game's March competition dates, college student-athletes could not compete. Instead, the U.S. Olympic Committee decided that the 1955 team would consist of seven players from the AAU and seven players from the U.S. Armed Forces. The 1954 AAU champion Peoria Caterpillars were unavailable because they were representing the USA at the 1955 World Championship, so the 1954 AAU runner-up Grihalva Buicks of San Diego, California, were chosen. A camp featuring 20 of the Armed Forces' top players was held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (OH) to determine the Armed Forces' seven players.

That's where the expectations for LeBron James were. Even by modern American standards, even in a breathy society that inhales and exhales hype-hype-hyperbole, the pressures applied to this teen-ager seemed somewhere between stratospheric and spacial. And he flew past them. Ask the biggest guy in town, 7-foot-3 Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Ask the kid's coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Paul Silas. Ask NBA commissioner David Stern. Ask opponents, scouts, anyone from A to the center called Z, and they'll repeat a phrase unprecedented in this age of pumped-up volumes and trumped-up images. He has exceeded expectations No one is ready to crown him the next Michael Jordan, mind you. But this kid is only 50 games into his professional career, this kid is only 19 years and 47 days old. Already, he has become the youngest in league history to surpass 1,000 points, breaking that plateau on the same night (Monday) as buddy Carmelo Anthony, who is about six months older. Already, his presence on NBA floors, in NBA stands, at NBA ticket windows, in NBA ratings, in NBA merchandising, in NBA everythings has not only rocked Cleveland but also the basketball planet.

We weren't quite sure what the response would be, or if there would be any at all. Well, to our surprise, the result was a clamor for a second list, raising the ante to include the 100 greatest players produced in Louisiana high schools. You gluttons. To select a list of this magnitude, the research had to be extensive. It included perusing through All-State and All-District teams from days of yore and lore to the present. Having attended Top 20 state tournaments since 1967 was invaluable, not to mention the thousands of games covered or watched over the past 36 years. THE OUTCOME was the discovery that our state's production of high school talent rivals that of most states on the Atlantic coast and New England. See for yourself. On how many teams would the great Baton Rouge High, LSU and St. Louis Hawks center Bob Pettit be placed on the second unit?

The Cleveland Cavaliers winning the lottery in any other year with any other Kenyon Martin or Kwame Brown waiting at the end of the rainbow wouldn't be convincing enough. But this is the year of LeBron James.

As it turned out, the Kansas City team was replaced by the Denver Rockets (later the Nuggets), and the ABA added an 11th franchise, the Kentucky Colonels, in March. The NBA's first great star, George Mikan , was named commissioner of the new league. Mikan came up with the idea of using a red, white, and blue ball. The ABA's also decided to use the three-point shot that had been pioneered by the short-lived American Basketball League. The first real confrontation with the NBA came in 1968, when Oakland signed

LeBron James sits alone in the hot and humid tiled whirlpool room at Gund Arena, remote in hand, hip-hop blaring from the TV overhead. Its the night before his 20th birthday, an hour before his Cavs are to take on the Rockets, two hours before an errant Dikembe Mutombo elbow breaks his face. His Cavs stand 17-11, first place in the Central Division. Uncharted territory. His averages of 24.4 points, 7 boards, 7.2 assists and 2.5 steals are all substantial improvements on the Rookie of The Year numbers he posted last season (well get to that), as is his 48 percent from the field. An All-Star starting spot is all but assured. But, practice. Were talking about practice. I like practice, LeBron says, turning down the TV. Practice makes perfect, and if you can get guys around you that are gonna practice perfect with you, it can help your team translate that into game situations.

James, who finished with six assists and five rebounds in 38 minutes, was among the very few who thought it possible for the Cavaliers to win so many games so quickly. "My goal was 30 (by the break)," James said. "But you know me, I expect us to win every night. What did we win last year, 35? Our next goal is to make the playoffs and to get home-court advantage."
