Remember The ABA: The Secret Life Of James Silas (by Dan Pattison) (DENVER) The ABA s best kept secret is San Antonio s guard james silas. Note DAN PATTISON was an ABA columnist for basketball Weekly, The Sporting News http://www.remembertheaba.com/ABAArticles/PattisonArticleSilas.html
Extractions: By DAN PATTISON (DENVER) The ABA's best kept secret is San Antonio's guard James Silas. Living in obscurity is a way of life for him. The 6-1, 185-pound guard was a two-time All-America at Stephen F. Austin. Stephen F. Austin? No one is sure yet whether that is a college or someone who just died at the Alamo. It hardly rings a bell like a UCLA, Indiana, Maryland, Kentucky, North Carolina, etc. But while Silas was there, the little NAIA Nacogdoches, Texas school was a power. His senior year, Stephen F. Austin was 29-1 and he averaged 30.7 points per outing. "No one heard of Stephen F. Austin even though we had a good team," Silas pointed out. "I think scouts should look to NAIA schools more. "There are good players in the NAIA who don't even get a chance. Coming out of the NAIA hurts a guy. If you have a big name like a Travis Grant or Elmore Smith (both former Kentucky State stars), it doesn't hurt you. But it has hurt others. There is no recognition. The bigger schools get the ink and television exposure. I thought I was as good as anyone I read about. I always thought I was as good as the big college guards. Now, I'm getting my chance to prove it." But playing with the Spurs in the ABA, Silas is back where he started living in obscurity. The ABA has no television exposure and hardly captures the national headlines. The only headlines it has corralled lately is the sinking or staying afloat of the Virginia franchise after three other franchises folded this season.

Overshadowed by scoring star and backcourt mate Gervin, Silas earned a reputation as the team's best clutch player. The 6-foot-3 team captain won several games by hitting the last shot in the closing seconds Thus, his nickname - "Captain Late."

Extractions: LeBron James LeBron James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. His mother, Gloria James, was only 16 at the time. His biological father, Anthony McClelland, was an ex-con uninterested in being a parent. Gloria raised LeBron on her own, and to this day he goes by her last name. Life was often a struggle for LeBron and his mother. Gloria battled personal problems during much of his childhood. Some of those were brought on by the death of her mother, who passed away when LeBron was an infant. Bouncing between retail and accounting jobs, Gloria was never able to land steady work, and she and LeBron moved from apartment to apartment. The pair got to know all the seedier neighborhoods of Akron, a city of more than 200,000 located less than a hour south of Cleveland. Despite her failings, Gloria worked hard to be a loving mother and shield LeBron from the poverty and violence of the streets. This was no easy chore, and at times made her choice of boyfriends seem puzzling. When LeBron was two, she started dating Eddie Jackson. In and out of trouble with the law, he went to prison in 1990 for aggravated cocaine trafficking. (In 2002, he pled guilty to mortgage fraud and mail fraud.) Nevertheless LeBron formed a bond with Jackson, and Gloria liked having a man around who was willing to serve as a father figure. Her brothers, Terry and Curt, also helped out.

Extractions: No I in Team but There's an M and an E Steve Nash has got the MVP award wrapped up. No doubt about it! I was convinced of this when I was in Seattle for the Phoenix Suns and the Seattle Sonics on March 6 th In the NBA pre-season I spoke with Lebron James when the Cavs were in Toronto. I couldn't believe my ears listening to King James speak, expressing a team first mentality. With the new wave of marketable NBA superstars coming why would we ever believe that someone wants to promote team first. It?s been so long since I had heard that kind of legit unselfish attitude be released from James, especially from someone so young. I didn't want to believe him but I had no choice, King James was speaking the truth. It was just a few months ago when James said his goal is to average a triple double. Far different from those who want to average the selfish triple double that we've been subjected to far too often recently. You don?t know about the selfish triple double? Double digit shot attempts, double digit missed shot attempt s and double digit free throw attempts. Of course NBA'ers will finish with 30 plus points if they shoot 25 times from the field and 15 free throws a game, do the math! You can't win a team championship all by yourself. Is it me or more often than not, when a player scores 40+ points a game their team loses. More unselfishness and less selfishness in sports is a necessary trend for all sports to pick up on ASAP. The teaching and growing in popularity of less me first is a beautiful thing.

TV MLB NBA ABA NFL WFL NHL WHL NASL MISL Stadiums Cards Others Other Sports By Patrick Mondout Topps produced a record number of cards for their basketball set in 1975 - the last to feature ABA cards (cards 221-330). In fact their record of 330 cards record would not be surpassed until . The increased selection included team checklist cards that featured a team photo on the front. The Seattle Super Sonics card had a great photo of the team deplaning a Boeing 747 (which may not have been " supersonic ", but was at least locally built). The price of the 10 card wax packs increased to 15¢ this year and, for the first time, did not include inserts - a double whammy for collectors. While there are still cards featuring head shots of players with unattractive walls behind them, this set featured more action photography than had ever appeared in a Topps set. The rookie card of Bobby Jones card below is an excellent example - as is the Moses Malone rookie on the right. Other rookies included Maurice Lucas and Keith Wilkes (later known as Jamaal Wilkes). The set had the cleanest design to date of a Topps basketball issue with just a pair of unnecessary angled bars in the top right keeping the card from being as close to "pure" as possible while still retaining the player's name and team on the front. The backs are memorable, even if they actually provide less space for biographical information. There is something about the the blue/green design (see below) that is more distinctive than any other of the Super70s basketball sets.

TV MLB NBA ABA NFL WFL NHL WHL NASL MISL Stadiums Cards Others Other Sports By Patrick Mondout This is one of the most memorable sets in any sport of the Super70s - though any set featuring guys named Corky Calhoun, Butch Beard, and Ticky Burden automatically qualifies. These cards were really big - bigger than the " tall boys " of the early Super70s. A full 3⅛ x 5¼ inches and great for autographs. The price of wax packs returned to 10¢, but you only received six cards instead of the usual ten - at least they were bigger. If you have not seen them in person then I'm afraid the pictures below won't help. They may look like like ordinary basketball cards, but you need to hold these larger than life cards in your hand to appreciate how cool they were to a child (with much smaller hands) of the Super70s. And while I will always be partial to the set for sentimental reasons, this was really the last classic set of basketball cards Topps ever produced. All of this is true despite some truly uninspired photos. Take a look at Dr. J on the right and the David Thompson rookie below. They are on the bench! Why not show one of them dunking over Artis Gilmore or Maurice Lucas? At least the size of the front allows for the largest unobstructed photos in the history of Topps basketball cards - even with the large letters spelling out the team nickname down the left side of the card.
