Extractions: * Diane Lane for Unfaithful I T'S Oscar time again and come March 23, I'll bag the remote and sit glued to the television for about three hours. Of course not everyone is excited about this annual event and won't necessarily take time out to watch it (what is wrong with you?) but they'll just have to find something else to do, because the rest of us have no intention of relinquishing ownership of the TV. Years ago Johnny Carson, who was presenting the Oscars, said so accurately, "This is the night that movie stars put away all their petty jealousies and bring out all their major jealousies". Nevertheless, all the non-winners somehow manage to remain demure and humble, and at the end of the show go back to their humdrum lives of making movies, travelling to exotic locations, and firing their agents. It's unfortunate that South Africans have not had much of an opportunity to see the Oscar nominated films before the show this year, but if you're lucky enough to find yourself in one of the bigger centres, you'll have every chance to catch them just before the awards go out.

But it was the Christian Youth Association (ACM) with centres in the main state capitals that popularized the sport throughout Brazil. Soon tournaments began to be held, mainly in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil reinforced its position as a force in basketball, winning the first South American championship in 1921. In 1925 the first Brazilian championships were held and in 1935, Brazil joined the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) formed three years previously. In 1936, basketball featured as an Olympic sport for the first time in Berlin where Brazil was a competitor. The men's and women's teams also competed at the world championships held from the 1950's onwards: the men's world championships started in 1950 and the women's in 1953. But Brazilian basketballs's first major international triumph came at the 1948 Olympics held in London, when Brazil took a bronze with a team in which Algodão, Alfredo, Brás and Ruy de Freitas were the outstanding performers. In the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and in Melbourne, in 1956, Brazil achieved sixth place. The Brazilian team in 1956 included Amauri and Wlamir, two stars in what was Brazil's golden age of basketball.

Extractions: Nicholson's career has spanned five decades Jack Nicholson has once again won critical acclaim for his portrayal of a father coming to terms with growing old in About Schmidt. BBC News Online charts his enduring career. Jack Nicholson is seen as a true Tinseltown icon - an award-winning, charismatic bad boy actor. His own life reads like a Hollywood script. He was raised by his grandmother who he believed was his mother, while his real mother was passed off as his big sister. There is a long line of beautiful girlfriends littering his past, including actresses Angelica Huston and Lara Flynn Boyle, ensuring he has stayed in both the review and gossip pages. The 65-year-old's ability to appeal to new generations, while often playing similar quirky characters, has kept him at the top for decades. If Nicholson builds on his 2002 Golden Globe success and wins the best actor Oscar for About Schmidt he will have collected the coveted statue in each of four decades to add to his seven Golden Globes. Nicholson starred with Helen Hunt in As Good as it Gets Cult producer and director Roger Corman gave Nicholson his big break, firstly in Cry Baby Killer and then The Little Shop of Horrors - which took just days to shoot.

Displeased with his starters' effort, Chargers coach Steve Weir put them on the bench and called on some junior varsity reserves. The youngsters responded with a 13-7 spurt to force a 25-25 tie at halftime. Brian Brock collected all six of his points and snared four rebounds during that four-minute stretch. Phillip Weeks picked the Eagles' pockets for two steals, Shadow Stewart grabbed four rebounds and Travis Davis tallied three points. Lone senior Shivar Person also stayed on the court during that period.

He scored more points in his basketball career than any other player, totaling 48,161 (the second leading scorer is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 38,387 points). Schmidt led the Brazilian National Team to an historic upset over the US National Team with David Robinson and Danny Manning in Indianapolis, 1987. Extractions: The crowd took up the cry: "Come on, Baehr-cat!" Cincinnati prevailed, 14-7, and the victory was memorialized in a cartoon published on the front page of the student newspaper, the weekly University News, on Nov. 3. The cartoon, by John "Paddy" Reece, depicted a bedraggled Kentucky Wildcat being chased by a creature labeled "Cincinnati Bear Cats". The name stuck, but not immediately. Following Teddy Baehr's graduation in 1916, the name dropped out of use, at least in print, for a few years. On Nov. 15, 1919, Cincinnati played at Tennessee. Cincinnati Enquirer writer Jack Ryder's dispatch on the game was the first time that the major media called UC's teams "Bearcats." From then on, the university's teams were regularly called Bearcats.

'About Schmidt' Uses Stand-in To Portray KU Campus In the movie About schmidt, Jack Nicholson plays Warren schmidt, 3, already is receiving oscar buzz and critics are saying that Nicholson is a shooin http://www.ku.edu/~kunews/2002/02N/DecNews/Dec16/schmidt.html
Extractions: Contact: Ranjit Arab , University Relations, (785) 864-8855. LAWRENCE The voice will be instantly recognizable to Jayhawk moviegoers even if the campus isn't. In the movie "About Schmidt," Jack Nicholson plays Warren Schmidt, a recent retiree and widower en route to stop his daughter's wedding. He announces in a voiceover that he is taking a detour in his journey from Omaha to Denver. "Next stop: my alma mater, the University of Kansas," he says in that famous Nicholson drawl. But no matter how hard you squint, you won't spot Jack strolling along the tree-lined Jayhawk Boulevard or sitting by Potter Lake, reflecting on the campus' renowned beauty. Instead, he stands at the corner of a courtyard surrounded by several red brick buildings as students some in KU sweatshirts and ball caps hurry past him on their way to class. You'll quickly realize that Jack isn't in Kansas anymore.
