The second half of the twentieth century produced many star Basketball players who helped the sport's popularity reach its zenith. From the end of the 1950s and through the 1960s, there was a battle-royal between two of the 'holy terrors' of American and world Basketball: Wilt Chamberlain, a centre who swept over records and personal bests, came up against Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics legend, who led his team to victory in no less than eleven successive championships. In the 1970s Lew Alcindore, later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabar, appeared in the Basketball world. Playing for UCLA and in ABA and NBA teams, he stayed in the forefront for two decades, winning titles and setting up appearances and total point records that will not be easily overcome. Another leading light of the time was Julius Irving (known also as "Dr. J", a player who looked like he was dancing, and raised the show of Basketball to new heights" The 1980s found two of America's great cities, Boston and Los.Angeles, struggling for the top place in the NBA under the leadership of two first-class players - for the Celtics, Larry Bird, an all-rounder with an incredible game sense, and for the Lakers, whom he took to five championships, Earvin 'Magic' Johnson, Jr., a charismatic 2.05 m playmaker with inspirational flashes and magic passes

Extractions: A few years ago, in 2000, I think, Isto é magazine sponsored a project to determine the greatest Brazilians of the twentieth century. The results were specific for different sectors (politics, science, art, etc...) and were determined by a panel of experts in each area. The original ranking can be found here: http://www.terra.com.br/istoe/biblioteca/brasileiro/ciencia/indice.htm Isto é magazine is an excellent weekly periodical, maybe a little deeper and serious than its rival, Veja magazine. I have to admit that in general, about 70% to 80% of the people selected in each category are not bad choices, but in all modesty I think I can do better. The original results and comments from the magazine are on the left while my corrected list is on the right side with my comments. Be aware that the criteria I am using for my ranking is overall influence and impact , not whether a person is good and/or bad. Another thing: I will let my personal preferences and prejudices affect my choices, but not in the ranking only in the comments on the right side. Oh yes, as stated before, to follow this page you need to have a fairly deep knowledge of Brazil. Later... I have added two more lists at the end of this page: Happy Brazilians and the 10 most corrupt.

Extractions: Basketball is unusual in that it was invented by one man, rather than evolving from a different sport. In 1891, Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian minister on the faculty of a college for YMCA professionals in Springfield, Massachusetts, sought a vigorous indoor game to keep young men occupied during the long New England winters. Legend has it that, after rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules, and nailed a peach basket onto the gym wall. The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium on January 20, 1892. "Basket ball", the name suggested by one of his students, was popular from the beginning, and with its early adherents being dispatched to YMCAs throughout the United States, the game was soon played all over the country. Interestingly, while the YMCA was responsible for initially developing and spreading the game, within a decade, it discouraged the new sport, as rough play and rowdy crowds began to detract from the YMCA's primary mission. Other amateur sports clubs, colleges, and professional clubs quickly filled the void. In the years before World War I, the Amateur Athletic Union and the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (forerunner of the NCAA) vied for control over the rules of the game.

OLYMPIANS TO WATCH GOLD DIGGERS: This year's U.S. Dream Team again sports a roster of NBA all-stars. Nigerian native Hakeem Olajuwon of the Houston Rockets, who didn't start playing the game until he was 15, became an American citizen in '93 to fulfill his dream of playing in the Olympics. Phoenix Suns star Charles Barkley, who led the '92 Dream Team in scoring, is back again. Orlando's Shaquille O'Neal, at 7 feet, 1 inch and 300 pounds, has been known to break backboards on his more ferocious slam-dunks. DARK HORSES: As in 1992, the big fight is for the silver. Extractions: So it went at the Tournament of the Americas in Portland, Ore., last month, where the Argentines and everyone else came to pose for pictures with Michael, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and their merry band of N.B.A. All-Star troubadours. In between, they played a little basketball. Very little. Take Cuba: with 3 1/ 2 min. remaining in the game, the team was behind by 70 points, and only the final horn saved it from losing by 100 or more. Panama dropped a cliff- hanger by a mere 60. When the tournament ended, with the Americans barely breaking a sweat except on the golf course, where they seemed to spend most of their time, everyone was ready to concede the gold medal in Barcelona to the assemblage now and forever more to be known simply as the Dream Team. Nevada bookmakers, who never miss an opportunity to make a dollar, have fastidiously refused to post odds or take a bet. The only surer wager than the Dream Team may be that George Foreman will not try to make it next as a featherweight. U.S. coach Chuck Daly has at his disposal the greatest arsenal of offensive and defensive weapons ever gathered on a basketball court. There are passers with 360 degrees vision like Bird (despite his creaky back), John Stockton and Magic. Chris Mullin and Jordan are excellent three-point shooters. No one in possession of his faculties and desirous of retaining them would dare drive down the lane into territory defended by Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and Karl Malone. Jordan and his Chicago Bulls teammate Scottie Pippen are tenacious open-court defenders. Then too there are Clyde Drexler and the Admiral, David Robinson. Twelfth man Christian Laettner will probably get a great view of all this talent mostly from the bench.
