Extractions: By By JOHN MARSHALL DENVER - Bryon Russell has been to the playoffs every year but one and has played in the NBA Finals three times. It's just the kind of experience the Denver Nuggets could use. "A player like that can contribute on and off the court," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. It's easy to see why the Nuggets would think so. Russell has been to the playoffs in 10 of his 11 seasons, going to the finals with Utah in 1997 and 1998. Though he didn't play much in the playoffs last season, he played a key role off the bench in helping the Los Angeles Lakers get to the finals, where they lost to Detroit. By adding Russell and Kenyon Martin, who went to two finals with New Jersey, the Nuggets have added a great deal of experience to go with their youthful talent. "I feel like I can provide some kind of leadership," Russell said. "I know what it takes, Kenyon Martin knows what it takes. We know how to win." Russell had something rare by NBA standards at the start of his career: stability. He played his first nine seasons with the Utah Jazz after being selected in the second round of the 1993 draft.

Extractions: LOS ANGELES Four former Utah Jazz players stood out in the Knicks-Lakers game, with Karl Malone and Bryon Russell defeating Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley New York's pair outdid the Los Angeles duo statistically, but the streaking Lakers still defeated the struggling Knicks 98-90 for their 10th straight victory. "They had great nights," Malone said of Anderson and Eisley, who scored 26 points each to combine for 52 of New York's 90 points. "But I like the end result they lost." Malone scored 20 points and Russell had 12 points, five rebounds and four steals to help the Lakers to their 27th consecutive regular-season home victory three shy of the franchise record set in 1951 when the Lakers played in Minneapolis. "They played well," Russell said of his former teammates. "We were cool when we were there we're cool now."

Extractions: (posted at 3:30 p.m. for Wednesday, June 9, 2004) We all should've known it was going in, right? It was Kobe , after all, and no matter how often he misses on any given night, when it comes down to the come down, you just know he's gonna knock it in, don't you? Like him or hate him, you must respect Kobe Bryant's ability to play basketball. Before I ramble on, let's check in with SLAM online's West Coast editor, Arash Markazi, for his report from Game Two... The story should be about "The Shot." It should be about Kobe Bryant doing what he does best, which is nothing short of the impossible. It should be about the Lakers coming back from a 6-point deficit with 36 seconds left and stealing a win from the Pistons. It should be about the Lakers avoiding an improbable 0-2 hole in the Finals and all but handing the title to the Pistons in the biggest upset in recent NBA Finals history. But it's not. Not for me at least.
Extractions: Evans is an odd name to lead off a list of potential free agents, but since the Griz only have the mid level exception to use, hes probably one of the Grizzlies best options this summer. Evans averaged 5 points and over 9 rebounds in less than 24 minutes per game despite being a somewhat undersized power forward. Hes a young (25 years old), aggressive role player who would be a tremendous help to the Grizzlies on the boards. Evans is a restricted free agent, so the Sonics could match any Grizzly offer and they have plenty of cap room even if they sign Ray Allen to a big deal. Therefore, the Griz may have to severely overpay for Evans or attempt to work a sign and trade with the Sonics. A sign and trade could be done with a combination of players but most likely would include Stromile Swift (of course, hed have to approve). In the unlikely event that the Griz are able to deal Jason Williams, they may be in the market for a point guard and they could do worse than BK. While Knight struggled for a while when he joined the Grizzlies, once he was healthy he played well and under control. Knight knows his job as a playmaker, plays hard-nosed defense, has a nice mid-ramge jumper and has played well under Mike Fratello in the past. If the Griz are fortunate enough to get a solid rebounder/star-type player in a trade, Knight would be a solid free agent point guard acquisition.

Advertisement O'Neal made his plea after the Lakers were thumped by Detroit in Game 3 to fall behind in the series, 2-1. "I would personally like to see a guy like Bryon Russell," O'Neal said. "He's been in the league nine years. Great shooter, pretty good defensive player, has been to the Finals twice. "I don't have an understanding of why he's not in the game. We have a lot of veterans on this team. I would like to see them in the lineup against a tough aggressive defense like this."
