Extractions: The Minnesota Timberwolves joined the NBA for the 1989-90 season as part of a two-phase league expansion that also brought in Orlando, Miami, and Charlotte. But the Timberwolves weren't the first pro basketball franchise in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Lakers of the early 1950s had been the dominant team of that era. Led by 6-10 George Mikan, the first great pro center, the Lakers won five titles in the six years between 1949 and 1954. Four years later, however, the team had fallen to a cellar-dwelling 19-53 record. With the No. 1 pick in the 1958 NBA Draft they selected Elgin Baylor of Seattle University. The 6-5 Baylor was one of the players who first introduced the acrobatic, above-the-rim style of basketball bravado that Julius Erving and Michael Jordan brought to future generations. In his 1958-59 rookie season, Baylor averaged 24.9 points and 15.0 rebounds and won NBA Rookie of the Year honors. The Minneapolis Lakers made it back into the NBA Finals in 1959 before falling to the Boston Celtics in four games.

Be sure to vote in the poll at right to crown the most offensive firebrand ever to plague the NBA. 1. Derrick Coleman (167 letters) Two words that should be spelled out in Twinkies Derrick Coleman. As a huge Syracuse fan, I was ultra-excited to see how promising his career began ... and that was about as good as it got. D.C. put on a few pounds but lost a lot of lustre. Since his rookie year, D.C.'s teams have always performed better with him on the bench. The longer he plays, the more he weighs ... No one has done less with more than big ole' D.C. Wyndmoor, Pa His nickname should stand for "Disruptive Crybaby." Everywhere he has gone has gotten worse with him in the lineup. When the Nets chose him as the No. 1 pick, everyone thought he would be the next great power forward and make New Jersey a playoff contender. All he did was give them extended summer vacations and more time on the golf course. Then he was traded to the Sixers for fellow first round bust Shawn Bradley. All he did there was bicker with players and coaches alike ... and I recall the time that he was missing for two days. The only good thing he did for the Sixers was to put them in the lottery so they could take Jerry Stackhouse and Iverson.

After a day of deliberations, the verdict came in: No punitive damages, although Sprewell must pay $105,000 to two people who were injured in a car accident that Sprewell admittedly caused. Pro Basketball - Feature: 04/24/97 From The Mining Company LA s D There is a principle of three that runs through basketball lore. Part of this is that isaiah rider and Kenny Anderson are good perimeter http://www.rawbw.com/~deano/articles/aa042497.htm
Extractions: Dateline: 04/24/97 Though the Bulls are the class of the league this year, tying what had been until their own record season last year the best record in history with a 69-13 mark, there are many saying that they can lose this year. The injuries to Kukoc and Rodman led to three losses in the last four (unimportant) games. Teams like Miami, New York, Utah, and Houston are all thinking seriously about ways to defeat the greatest team in history. If they don't watch out, however, they all could face stiff tests early in the playoffs. Below I present the basic odds of each team winning their respective playoff series and their odds to win in three, four, or five games. Among the obvious things is that New York is in for a dogfight in their opening series, with the lowest chance among the favorites of winning their series. Eastern Conference

Extractions: Overall Four Games Five Games Six Games Seven Games 1. Utah 4. LA Lakers 2. Seattle 3. Houston Both 2-3 matchups are very even, more even than any first round matchup was and I would subjectively agree with that. Miami plays very inconsistently and the numbers reflect that, especially through their home court disadvantage, having played better on the road throughout the year than at home. Houston also has been all over the place, which is what happens when you rely upon three-point shots to the extent that Houston did. Since I am posting these numbers after the first couple games of the first round, one can already say that certain prior possibilities are no longer possible. Specifically, the Lakers' odds of winning their series has now dropped to 5% after losing the first two games. Atlanta's odds haven't dropped much at all since they weren't expected to win at all in Chicago. Seattle's odds did drop to about 30% after losing convincingly in the first game. Still, their chances are not unrealistic. Wallace fouls out with two minutes to go, when the Blazers need him most.

Extractions: The Timberwolves had two first round picks in the 1999 draft. This year they have none. In the real NBA draft, the Woves pick #51, here it it is #33. Their GM is Ryan Fortson who selects: Soumaila Samake, C, 7'2", Cincinnati (IBL) After over a decade of rotating through a variety of different line-ups, the Timberwolves seem to have found a line-up that they are at least partially comfortable with and which contains players who want to be in Minnesota . Whether or not this team can win a championship remains to be seen. However, there is much with which to be pleased with the current team. The T'Wolves reached a franchise high 50 wins and played a solid Portland Trailblazers team very well before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs 3-1 . Indeed, the fact that Minnesota played closer games to Portland than did the Utah Jazz and that the San Antonio Spurs may be losing Tim Duncan leads many to believe that Minnesota should be favored to win the Midwest Division next season Another reason to have hope for the current roster is their strong finish. After a disastrous 7-13 start, Minnesota had the second best record (behind the Lakers) in the NBA over the last 62 games by going 43-19. Furthermore, the team is quite young. Brandon will be 30 to start the season, but the other

But you never see Isaiah Rider, better known as J.R. when he was raising havoc on and off the court for UNLV in 1991-93. He usually has come and gone by the time word leaks that he's in Las Vegas. "I haven't played there since '93, so I'm excited," Rider said. The Lakers are Rider's fourth NBA team in eight years. He has had tumultuous encounters with each of his previous three teams Minnesota, Portland and Atlanta. No one has disputed his ability to play basketball. He remains one of the NBA's most explosive scoring threats and has a great feel and knowledge for the game. What drove his former employers crazy was his inability to be on time. He'd oversleep and miss practice or a team flight. He'd be late on other occasions. He literally marched to a beat different from that of the rest of his teammates. Or at least the beat of a different watch.

Extractions: Main Thursday, March 03, 2005 The inmates are running the asylum: Exhibit A Trail Blazers fire Cheeks Portland has lost seven of nine Maurice Cheeks deserved better than this sad-sack collection of malcontents. It would have been nice if management had been blessed with the balls to back him up. Cheeks was a lame duck since Day One, the players knew, and management did nothing to change that impression. It appears I may have been somewhat overly optimistic in my belief that the TrailBlazers may have been finally heading in the right direction. Portland has, over the course of this season, quietly but repeatedly revisited the same terrain. Truly, a quality individual such as Maurice Cheeks did not deserve this collection of spoiled malcontents and the overly indulgent front office that helped to create and perpetuate the problems. Cheeks was near the end of a four-year contract worth an estimated $12 million.
