Extractions: Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret Morning News Lance Allred, who played for the Utes in 2001, has plenty to celebrate as he considers his options. Allred's work ethic has not only helped him achieve all-Big Sky status at Weber State, but it has caught the attention of the NBA and a handful of international pro teams. "Talent can only take you so far, but not one works harder than me," Allred said. Despite a less-than-stellar performance at the Portsmouth Invitational, the 6-foot-10, 270-pound center had a pre-draft workout with the Utah Jazz and was invited to play with the Jazz summer camp squad. Allred has also had plans to do post-draft workouts with the San Antonio Spurs and L.A. Clippers. If things don't work out in the NBA, Allred has contract offers from teams in Spain, Italy, Germany and Korea. Anyway you look at it, the former East High star is going to play pro basketball somewhere.

Extractions: With little incentive from an apathetic public, the playoffs in professional hockey and basketball are off to a drowsy start. Their problem is the same: Neither is good TV. That should be a joke, of course. Good basketball is great TV. But the NBA doesn't have that now, so it's working furiously to make good TV out of bad basketball. The result has been a lingering disposition of the casual sports fan not to take the league seriously. David Stern's reputation as a promotional genius is now to be staked on ideas like miking the coaches so the viewers can get an inside look at an NBA huddle! "Get somebody open!" says the coach. "We have 24 seconds to shoot!" Recognizing that the players and teams were two-dimensional entities with no story to tell, the NBA sought to enforce team strategy as made-for-TV human drama. So much did the NBA want to undercut its seriousness, putting up the game's inner workings as schtick, that the league imposed heavy fines on coaches who didn't cooperate.

Extractions: COLUMN: Topsy-turvy seasons dominate news, bring flavor to athletics Just when I thought I finally had sports figured out, everything I've counted on has gone haywire. Utter chaos - dogs and cats living together. There was a time when you could count on the Rams like death and taxes - painful even to think about. But suddenly, they are playing for the Super Bowl, and could destroy the myth that a team which plays in a dome cannot win a Super Bowl (though since the Bowl will be played in the Georgia Dome, I call shenanigans, and want an asterisk in the record book). This is not the Rams team I have come to know and scoff at. Where is the divisive spirit of a disgruntled Eric Dickerson? I guess that was just an L.A. thing. Jim Everett as starting quarterback? Gone the way of Tony Banks' assault on Dave Krieg's vaunted NFL record for fumbles. Hell, Isaac Bruce hasn't even "injured" his hamstring and sat out for half the season. But it gets worse. In basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers are finally clicking. It's like they have amassed the most talented group of players in the league or something. A team known for chemistry akin to adding water to acid has suddenly become placid. No Rick Fox calling Sam Jacobson the team's only pure shooter (albeit before Glen Rice, but still kinda funny). No feud between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. And even though Kurt Rambis is probably sulking in a corner, muttering "I could've done that", Phil Jackson has this team playing at a championship level.

Extractions: From my last column, I noted that Phil Jackson "is expected to be the next Laker coach. One source says it could be announced as soon as Friday. Another says its close but might take another couple of weeks to be official." A week later, Dr. Jerry Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, told a select group of media representatives that he had yet to even have formal negotiations with Jackson. My sources respond by saying that Buss is being truthful to a point. They suggest that Laker representatives have had lengthy negotiations with Jackson's agent, Todd Musburger . . . but that Buss has not talked directly with Phil about the position. Since the Buss press conference, the rumor mill has come to a near halt. I'm not entirely sure what he aimed to achieve, but whatever information was or was not leaking from the Laker organization has stopped flowing. Looking at Buss' comments, the Lakers won't gamble on a coach "who hasn't had a lot of past success." That would suggest that the Lakers won't hire a young head coach with little experience. There are very few coaches with NBA championships under their belt still active in the industry. They include Gregg Popovich, Larry Brown, Pat Riley and Jackson. Perhaps the Lakers have another in mind, but Chuck Daly hasn't coached for quite a while and they've already tried Rudy Tomjanovich.
