Extractions: The President. Well, I thank you all very much for that greeting, but believe me these are the ones that deserve the applause. And it is we who today will say, ``Hail to the Lakers.'' It was a great pleasure to welcome all of you to the White House. Your entire championship series down to yesterday's great win was an inspiration. And all of you showed America what pride, determination, and guts can accomplish when they're combined with some of the best talent on the floor. Yesterday afternoon, it really was showtime in the Boston Garden. And your victory is all the greater because you won it from another truly great team. When you went to the Garden, you knew that the next two games were going to decide the championship either way, and you knew that even though you were playing in Boston it wasn't going to be any tea party. [Laughter] Kareem says that yesterday's victory was just like the Brooklyn Dodgers' breakthrough against the Yankees in the 1955 World Series. Well, Kareem, I remember that series, so I think you may be, as they sometimes say of me, showing your experience. [Laughter] But yesterday all you showed was why you've been voted the most valuable player of the series. As so many said, you're 38, but you played like you were 25. And that 14-foot sky hook with only 61 seconds left in the game was truly a thing of beauty. All I can say is we're all looking forward to seeing you defend the Lakers' championship title next year.

Nov/Dec '02 > Basketball: Top of the Rim Basketball: Top of the Rim After considering all the data, we rank the all-time greatest NBA teams By Kenneth Shouler After the Chicago Bulls won their 70th game in the 1995-96 season, a reporter asked Michael Jordan if they were the greatest team ever. Jordan's reply was curt: "Did anyone else win 70 games?" "No" was the correct answer to Jordan's question then and now. Since the Bulls' accomplishment, no National Basketball Association team has even come close to matching their 72-10 record. By the time the curtain drew on its postseason, Chicago had won 87 and lost 13. Jordan had won his record eighth scoring title. Had any player ever carried his team the way Jordan had carried the Bulls? Whatever the answer, basketball historians and casual fans support other candidates as the greatest team the 1985-86 Boston Celtics; the 1971-72 and 1986-87 Los Angeles Lakers; the 1966-67 and 1982-83 Philadelphia 76ers. All were irrefutably great. But after systematic consideration of the data, which team stands alone? Skeptics often claim that those 1995-96 Bulls, the 2001-02 Lakers, or any number of clubs might have run up sensational records against patsies. Teams from previous eras, they argue, had to face a more balanced league. The Celtics of the 1980s had to conquer powerhouses such as the 76ers, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Detroit Pistons before even getting to the Lakers ( or Houston Rockets) in the Finals.

Five of the 12 players on the West roster, along with two from the East, are considered power forwards. Extractions: Los Angeles Lakers ('88 Record: 62-20) It doesn't matter now, but what was Pat Riley's guarantee to repeat in '88 really worth? It couldn't have been a money-back guarantee. Who would pay the money back? Who would the money go to? To the fans who paid $10 and (way) up to watch them in the Forum? To the people who paid to watch them on cable? To the people who heard Riley's guarantee live? When people make vague guarantees as Riley did, what we always seem to get is what was guaranteed. Karl Malone and Larry Bird both made brash guarantees with no conditions for failure in the playoffs and they both produced. Joe Namath made his famous guarantee before Super Bowl III despite very long odds. And he came through. Car salesmen always spell out what we get in our guarantee when we buy a car. If our new car has trouble before 50,000 miles, they'll fix it for free as long as we have had normal maintenance. Sometimes the guarantee doesn't go into effect, but sometimes it does and we have to bring the car into the dealer, then drive a loaner for a week or two. It's a hassle, but, "at least we didn't have to pay for it." What would happen if the car salesman said, "I guarantee you this car will run perfectly for 50,000 miles"? No conditions for failure. Just an open guarantee, a la Pat Riley. Would the car be better? Probably. It would probably also be a Rolls Royce. Would we pay $100,000 for the car? Probably not. That's too much to pay.
