Extractions: Sacramento, USA, March 26 (AP) - Vlade Divac and Predrag Stojakovic of the Sacramento Kings lead a group of NBA players who will hold a basketball camp this summer for children from the former Yugoslavia. Divac and Stojakovic will be in Treviso, Italy, from June 29-July 2 to instruct players from 12-14 years of age. They will be joined by Atlanta's Toni Kukoc and six other NBA players from the former Yugoslav republics in "Basketball Without Borders," which also will include seminars on education and drug abuse. "It's going to be a nice thing for kids who sometimes don't get a chance to enjoy basketball the same way kids in America do," Divac said. The event is co-sponsored by the NBA, the United Nations Drug Control Program, Benetton Treviso and FIBA, the governing body of international basketball. Kukoc, who played for Benetton Treviso before joining the NBA, Divac and Stojakovic will be joined by Bruno Sundov and Zan Tabak of the Indiana Pacers, Aleksandar Radojevic of the Denver Nuggets, Radislav Nesterovic of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Dalibor Bagaric and Dragan Tarlac of the Chicago Bulls. The event will reunite children from Yugoslavia's former republics, which gained independence over the past decade after ethnic wars. Fifty children will be the guests of Benetton Treviso at the Italian League team's facilities north of Venice. Ten children will be chosen by each of the national basketball federations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia, which consists of Serbia and Montenegro.

"I am troubled that a rule was admittedly violated and it took us five years to find out about it," Geiger said.

"We concur with the facts of the NCAA report and we accept the penalties as appropriate to the violations," university president Stephen Hulbert said. The university's proposed penalties, including forfeiting football and basketball victories and cutting scholarships, were accepted, and the NCAA added a year to the suggested three-year probation.

Wizblog: Mr. Clean admitted making a $6000 cash payment to onetime recruit aleksandar radojevic, One piece of the puzzle in the firing of Ohio State men s basketball http://www.danwismar.com/archives/wizblog/001896.html
Extractions: "...to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind" Main Buckeye fans are stunned by the facts in the case of Jim O'Brien, the Ohio State basketball coach who was fired this week when it was disclosed that he was involved in payments to recruits and favors supplied to players that were clear violations of NCAA regulations. O'Brien has always had a squeaky clean reputation, and it is that image in the minds of Buckeye fans that makes this case such a shocker. The initial report dealt with a cash payment to the family of a recruit, and dated from 1998: The coach admitted making a $6,000 cash payment to one-time recruit Aleksandar Radojevic, whose home situation in war-torn Yugoslavia was in turmoil. Radojevic never enrolled at Ohio State, and since he had never played for the Buckeyes, the hope was that while serious, the violations might not carry severe NCAA penalties. Then the reasons for O'Brien's disclosure started to come out. Boban Savovic, another Yugoslavian player who had been a part of OSU Big Ten Championship teams while playing from 1999-2001, was the subject of a lawsuit that had just been filed. Now an actual OSU player was involved, although the involvement of O'Brien in the Savovic matter has not been clearly established at this point. From the Bucknuts.com article
STARTING FIVE: NBA Title So Near, So Far From Utah Jazz home with a little review of the monumentally disappointing aleksandar radojevic, Ohio State s basketball program, for whom radojevic never actually http://probasketball.about.com/b/a/134101.htm
Extractions: The Utah Jazz find themselves so near to being a legitimate NBA Title contender, and yet so far. The team's most glaring need is a dynamic one-on-one scorer with the ability to break down opposing defenses and take that final shot in the clutch. Without that game-breaking talent, there's simply no one to fear on the Jazz. Carlos Boozer is the picture of efficiency and Andrei Kirilenko has mastered feeding off the mistakes of others, but neither is that traditional scorer that opponents need to draw up gameplans for. Fortunately, Utah has a wealth of attractive chips to acquire that talent on the trade market. So what's holding them back? The perception that Jerry Sloan can win without great talent, fooling the Jazz into filling key positions with marginal players as long as they're coachable. Read more in our
