Pedestrian bridge collapses at LMS The worst nightmare of Lowes Motor Speedway President Humpy Wheeler came true on May 20 when a concrete pedestrian walkway carrying more than 100 race fans collapsed, injuring 107 fans. It was the second tragedy in two years at the track three fans were killed when a tire flew into the stands at an Indy event in 1999. According to experts, 11 rows of steel support strands imbedded in the walkway were "eaten up" by the chemical calcium chloride, which caused an 80-foot section of a pedestrian bridge to buckle into a V-shape nearly 20 feet below, trapping fans inside a mesh fence and between tons of concrete. Three victims remained in critical condition for weeks, and lawsuits are pending. The bridge was reconstructed and reopened for the UAW-GM Quality 500 in October. 3. Extractions: Based on the admittedly scant evidence available this week, opportunities for basketball coaches have never been better. Or worse. Then there's the very little-noticed tale of Michael Grant. At a news conference Thursday, Southern University chancellor Edward Jackson tied the bow on a story that's been making the rounds on the Jaguars' campus and reported by the Baton Rouge (La.) Advocate for several weeks: That Grant is being canned as basketball coach with one year left on a three-year contract because he interviewed for another job. Even in a business where guys have been fired for behaving like frat boys (see Larry Eustachy at Iowa State), that takes some chutzpah. Then again, loyalty was never designed to be a one-way street.

Greule/Allsport MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Minnesota Timberwolves swingman Malik Sealy was killed Saturday when his sport-utility vehicle was hit head-on by a pickup truck traveling the wrong way on a divided highway. Sealy, 30, died of head and chest injuries after the 4 a.m. CDT crash on Highway 100 just north of a construction zone in suburban St. Louis Park. He was on his way home after celebrating the 24th birthday of teammate Kevin Garnett , who had admired Sealy as a youth. Timberwolves players and players' wives were at Sealy's home comforting his wife, Lisa, and young son, Malik Remington, said coach Flip Saunders and Kevin McHale, vice president of basketball operations. "This is a sudden and devastating loss to our team," McHale said. "We're in shock. Malik was one of the most popular players in our locker room, and one of the biggest reasons behind our turnaround and success this past season on the court."

Extractions: COLUMN: Sense of 'machismo' contributed to Phills' fatal crash Mourners sat in tears at Bobby Phills' funeral on Sunday. On Monday, Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, the ironic death of one of the NBA's classiest players set in. Family members, teammates and friends have characterized the 30-year-old Charlotte Hornets guard as a dedicated father and husband and a strong force in the community, perhaps even stronger than the basketball player who averaged 10.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists for his career. In many ways, Phills was the anti-athlete, someone who didn't seem to fit the machismo of the professional sporting world. He failed that characterization in one way, though, and that machismo killed him. Police sources have said that Phills was racing teammate David Wesley after practice when Phills' 1997 Porsche 993 Cabriolet skidded off the road and crashed into oncoming traffic in the other lanes. Investigators believe the Hornets' guards may have been traveling at speeds of close to 110 mph when the crash occurred. Not that this is anything new. Stories constantly break about athletes who are cited for speeding. Tim Hardaway's highway patrol run-ins could fill an episode of COPS. Psychologists have sought to answer why such a large percentage of professional athletes have a knack for driving at abnormally high speeds and the answers usually deal with a heightened sense of machismo, as if nothing can happen to them because they are athletes. It's as if speeding is an athletic test, like mastering the fadeaway jumper or slam dunking from the free-throw line. It's super human.
