Extractions: Another week, another injury as Jason Williams became the most recent Grizzlies player to ride the pine as a result of a foot injury. With just one game remining before the All Star break, it wouldn't be surprising if Williams sits out the Boston game in order to get a few additional days of rest for the foot. With the Grizzlies huge number of injuries sidelining 60% of the starting line-up, things have been very quiet on the trade front. Since the consensus is that a healthy Grizzlies team has a chance at making a nice run in the post-season so long as they can avoid the San Antonio Spurs, most believe that unless an unlikely blockbuster unexpectedly occurs, Jerry West will stand pat with this group for the remainder of the season. This has led to a few grumbles accusing West of overvaluing his players and being unable to pull the trigger on a big trade that would help the Griz. Of course, this neglects to take into account something that few anticipated upon West's hiring - some teams are scared to deal with Jerry West and other deals have fallen through for what can only be called strange circumstances. Two summers ago, the Grizzlies made a run at Olowokandi through a sign and trade with the Clippers. However, Clippers owner Donald Sterling reportedly was so angry with Olowokandi's effort (or lack thereof) in his final season in LA that Sterling didn't want to do a sign and trade simply because he didn't want Olowokandi to be rewarded with a contract in excess of the mid-level exception. Without the ability to do a sign and trade, Olowokandi ended up signing a mid-level deal with Minnesota.
Extractions: - With the Grizzlies win over Toronto, their magic number stands at 5. With eight games remaining, they are two games in the win column and 3 games in the loss column ahead of Minnesota. The Griz have home games this weekend against a Shaq-less Miami and Charlotte before embarking on a brutal road trip with games at Dallas, Houston, Denver and San Antonio. - The Griz recently looked good against the Lakers and the Raptors while looking pretty good for three quarters against Denver. The problem is that you can't get a good feel for just how well they are playing when they pound two teams with terrible inside play (LA and Toronto). On the other hand, they played both Seattle and Denver close and these are two of the better teams in the Western Conference.

Extractions: The center position provides an interesting dilemma for Fantasy Basketball owners. With only one legitimate star at the position ( Shaq ), should you forgo the position early and take two randoms in the last couple of rounds or proceed as normal and try fill the position with the best player available when presented the opportunity? I'd go with the former you're better off solidifying other spots with premium talent than settling for an average player at center. There's plenty of ham n' egger depth at center that you should be able to score a couple of sleepers late in the draft ( Tony Battie Dan Gadzuric Jerome James ) to adequately do the job. (Players may also qualify at positions listed in parenthesis.)
