High In The NBA National basketball Association (NBA) veteran charles oakley of the TorontoRaptors reignited the league s smoldering controversy over drug use among http://www.stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/175/nba.shtml
Extractions: High in the NBA National Basketball Association (NBA) veteran Charles Oakley of the Toronto Raptors re-ignited the league's smoldering controversy over drug use among players last week when he told the New York Post that the league's drug testing policy was "a joke" and that more than half of league players are regular marijuana smokers. "You got guys out there playing high every night," Oakley claimed. "You got 60% of your league on marijuana. What can you do?" The 17-year league veteran also told the Post that marijuana-smoking had increased dramatically during his career. When he first broke into the league, Oakley said, "there might have been one out of six" players using marijuana. "Now it's six out of 12," he claimed. When queried about the accuracy of his figures, Oakley said, "It's over 50%, and once you get over 50 you've got to go to the next number, 60." While Oakley was immediately criticized for his remarks by NBA officials and some players and coaches, others defended the accuracy of his comments. NBA Commissioner David Stern called Oakley "reckless" for making such statements without providing specifics and challenged him to turn any evidence he had over to the league. And Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders soon joined the chorus.

Extractions: Charles Oakley, a reserve forward for the Washington Wizards, charged at Clipper Coach Alvin Gentry during the shoot-around Wednesday morning at Staples Center, threatening Gentry with physical harm. Michael Jordan of the Wizards and Dennis Johnson, a Clipper assistant, and others restrained Oakley. The incident happened as the Clippers were leaving the court and the Wizards were taking it for a workout several hours before Washington's 108-104 victory Wednesday night in front of an arena-record crowd of 20,578. "A bunch of us were just standing around talking, Alvin, D.J., Michael, Doug Collins and [Wizard assistant] Patrick Ewing, when Oakley starts talking and coming toward Alvin," said one eyewitness who did not want to be identified. "They all had to stop him before he got to Alvin." It's not the first run-in the Clippers have had with Oakley in recent seasons. On June 30, 1998, Oakley struck a woman in the face after she resisted his advances outside an Atlanta waffle house, according to the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. Solicitor General Carmen Smith confirmed that Oakley was charged with battery and simple battery but would not comment on the details of the case.

To get an idea of what the average stats for a player active on a starting fantasy roster would be I analyzed the statistics of the 120 players who averaged the most minutes played per game last season (hey ... what else are you going to do during The Lockout ... watch baseball? ... I don't think so!). The averages for 8 common statistical categories are shown in the table below. Also, to determine how the players stats were distributed above and below the averages I found the standard deviation of the 120 players for each stat category. A 'bell' shaped distribution would predict that 68% of the players would fall within one standard deviation of the average. Extractions: Charles Oakley (born December 18 in Cleveland, Ohio ) is a 6'9" former basketball player who played power forward and gained fame in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks in the early 1990s. Charles gained a reputation for being a hard-worker and tenacious rebounder for all of the teams he played for, especially the Knicks, where Charles played the role of partner to Patrick Ewing in the low post. Drafted in 1985 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Charles' draft rights were immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls. There, Oakley provided another scoring option and steady offensive and defensive performances to an up-and-coming Bulls squad led by a young Michael Jordan With the drafting and development of Horace Grant , the Bulls traded Oakley to the New York Knicks for 7'1" center Bill Cartwright . Oakley eventually became a part of the core with which the Knicks built around, which also featured Ewing, John Starks , and point guard Mark Jackson . Charles' hard work and physical play in the Knicks defense won the hearts of many loyal Knicks fans, making him a fan favorite.

Player poll says 30 percent, but some think much higher By CHRIS TOMASSON Scripps Howard News Service February 19, 2005 Longtime NBA forward Charles Oakley said four years ago he believed 60 percent of NBA players used marijuana. He might have overestimated two-fold. A survey by the Rocky Mountain News revealed NBA players believe about 30 percent of those in the league use marijuana. The News posed the question to 151 players. Of those, 59 were willing to give a percentage. The average figure given by those players is 30.1 percent. The mean figure, the number in which half the percentages are below and half above, is 20 percent. "Yes, it's a problem (in the NBA)," said Dallas center Shawn Bradley. "A lot more people use (marijuana) than we think. I don't know if the percentage is 60, but if it's half of that, it's a problem." Players were told in the question about Oakley's comment four years ago. They then were asked to give what they believe is the percentage.
Article, Feb. 1996 - Knicks Trade Smith Last week, the Knicks annouced a trade that sends charles Smith and second a megadeal that would send away the likes of charles oakley, John Starks, http://www.columbia.edu/cu/moment/v0/021496/smith.html
Extractions: F or the first time in four years, the New York Knicks comes up with a smart, creative deal. For the first time in four years, the Knicks management wakes up, recognizes, and admits that this Knick team is just not good enough to bring New York its first championship since 1973. A fter all the missed layups by Charles Smith, the woeful 2 for 18 performance in Game 7 of the Championship series by John Starks, and the painful-to-watch missed finger-roll by their franchise player Patrick Ewing, even an idiot would recognize that the Knicks simply stink. A ll those self-created championship dreams turn out to be absolute nonsense. Just as what I wrote couple months ago before the season started, as much as I love the Knicks, admit it, with the players they have, they aren't going nowhere! C harles Smith's departure marks the beginning of an end to the Knicks era, if there were any. Since his arriving the Big Apple in the summer of 1992, he has never fulfilled what the Knicks expected him to be a 20-point, 8-rebound power forward who was not only talented but also very aggressive. Knick fans saw neither. I f Smith were that 20-8 player whom the Knicks acquired, he would probably have worthed the 21 million New York was paying him.
