You are a part of one of the most tradition-rich, passionate and spirited fan bases of any university. Perhaps the craze started with the legendary Phog Allen, coach of the Kansas Jayhawks for 39 seasons and also the most dominating coach in college-basketball history. In his 39 seasons, Allen won 590 games and led Kansas to the National Championship in 1952. Allen Fieldhouse, named after Forrest âPhogâ Allen, is the home of the Jayhawks, and a time capsule of the traditions and successes of the Kansas basketball program. The building, a landmark on campus, is located on Naismith Drive. The streetâs name is attributed to James Naismith, the inventor of basketball who was also a University graduate student and the first basketball coach at the University in 1898.

And many of you didn't. Here are some of the games our users thought deserved mention. You went as far back as 1966, what about UNC's undefeated season that culminated in two triple overtime wins in the final four (they played them in two days rather than the current three now) beating Wilt (the seven foot stilt that plays like eight) Chamberlain. Top that for excitement! Christian, Beaufort, N.C. Danny Manning kicking Oklahoma's butt on his OWN. What is wrong with the person that wrote this? How can you say that KU's Danny Manning beating Oklahoma on his own isn't worth being in here? Ian, Fort Scott, Kan. The part of this story you left out and everyone seems to leave out is the fact that Christian Laettner should not have been in the game or even sitting on the bench. I am a Duke fan. I appreciate their style and winning the right way. Laettner STOMPED on a Kentucky player's stomach in a most disgusting show of poor sportmanship just prior to the famous play. He should have been ejected from that game and suspended from the next, had someone else made the miracle shot that he did. I am sick to death everytime this play is praised. It is ironic that this play by a Duke student/athlete clearly symbolizes how morally bankrupt college athletics have become.

Reid were teammates on the 1988 U.S. Olympic team and they both have ties to the state of North Carolina. There is, then, a familiarity between the two, enough so that Manning is able speak to the qualities that Reid, the Bucks' latest free-agent signee, will most likely bring to Milwaukee. So go ahead and ask him. "Nastiness," Manning says. Danny Manning provides a veteran inside presence for the Bucks. This is not a bad thing for a basketball team largely devoid of strong personalities. The Bucks, they once said around the league, what a bunch of nice guys. Nice is good, but it doesn't win games. A team needs an edge, the kind that Sam Cassell brought from New Jersey last season.

Careers of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: Aug. 20,1999 St. Francis - Just call him Fast Ernie. After only six days on the job as the Milwaukee Bucks' general manager, Ernie Grunfeld orchestrated a four-player trade Thursday with the Orlando Magic that helped fill at least one of his new team's pressing needs. In exchange for Armen Gilliam and Chris Gatling, forwards whose overlapping minutes effectively canceled each other out, the Bucks received a pair of similarly well-traveled veterans in Danny Manning and Dale Ellis. The Bucks followed that Friday by signing 6-foot-10 free agent J.R. Reid to a three-year deal worth reportedly $6.6 million. Reid, who last played with the Los Angeles Lakers after being traded last season from the Charlotte Hornets as part of the Glen Rice deal, will fit under the Bucks salary cap with their $2.2 million "middle-class" exception.
Extractions: For The Sporting News They always were a strange pair, this little coach from Kansas and his tall superstar. The coach, so restless and uptight, never seemed satisfied no matter how much success he had. And his great big man never seemed eager to become the dominant player he could be, seeking instead to blend within the concepts of team play. But on a warm, emotional April night in the heartland of America, the two men finally cast off their demons and found contentment by winning the 50th NCAA basketball championship in a most stunning and wonderful manner. Larry Brown, the coach, has spent his adult life searching for what he calls "the perfect job." But what position could be better than his current one, now that he has won his first title with a team so depleted by injuries and ineligibilities that it hardly appeared good enough to last through the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament, much less get to the final? "A guy I walk with told me I've got to stop and smell the roses," Brown said on the eve of the Jayhawks' 83-79 upset of Oklahoma in the championship. "I never knew what he meant until now.
