Extractions: WHEN REGGIE LEWIS, the popular captain of basketball's most storied team, collapsed while shooting baskets and died of heart failure, the city of Boston treated him like a fallen hero. The affable, 27-year-old Boston Celtics star was so popular that it required a college gymnasium to contain the throng of athletes, civic leaders and fans who came to pay their final respects and to salute Lewis for his good deeds on and off the court. Now, more than 19 months later, his death has been resurrected as an indictment of the Lewis family, the Celtics and, ultimately, the National Basketball Association. Last week The Wall Street Journal, in a long investigative piece, charged that Lewis, his wife and the team may have covered up evidence of cocaine use because it jeopardized lucrative disability and life-insurance policies.

Two different magazines had cover pictures of 76ers guard Allen Iverson. One of the covers, from The Sporting News Running Out Of New York Briefs Holy Magnolia, Batman! No, frogs did not rain down from the sky! This week, Fox broadcast a new kind of game show, one with "genius" children competing against other geniuses for cash and prizes. Somehow, I think that the idea is somewhat creepy, as if intelligence is a barometer for future success. I thought that Fox had placed a moratorium on "real life television" after the fiasco that was the "Marry A Multi-Millionaire" show. Tennis players live a glamorous life. They play all over the world, and are praised and cheered, most of the time, as very young people. The best thing is that they win millions of dollars and get to retire early. Bjorn Borg "retired" the first time at 27. This week, former number 1 player in the world, Jim Courier announced that he would be retiring at the ripe old age of 29. Courier will be an analyst for American television coverage of Wimbledon. It must be nice. To no great surprise, the Chicago Blackhawks, the team with the longest current streak of play without a championship, fired Coach Lorne Molleken this week. The player-friendly coach was backed by the team, but after the Hawks got off to another lousy start, Molleken was demoted to Assistant Coach under "Bullet" Bob Pulford. Obviously, the duo did little with the team, finishing out of the playoffs for the third consecutive year. So, Molleken is gone and General Manager Mike Smith says that more changes are to come. However, coaching was not the problem. The Blackhawks have one star, Tony Amonte, several players that are overpaid, and a bunch of average guys. The team needs better talent overall and that means spending Wirtz considerable fortune, and not for old All Stars near the end of their careers.

James had a season-high 16 points and tied another season best with seven rebounds against Detroit's bruising front line, leading the SuperSonics to a 95-87 victory over the Pistons on Friday night. One of his best efforts ever? James was too modest to agree. "I can't really say. I don't focus on my own personal games," he said. "I focus on my ability to accommodate, to give the team what they need. ... Whatever the position calls for that night, I just want to go out and do it." James added three blocked shots, and the Sonics matched the intensity of the NBA's most physical team. Inside players

Extractions: By Ken Gornstein resident Curry said this week he will move quickly to implement the major recommendations of the blue-ribbon commission appointed last year to investigate the practices and standards of the athletics department and to look into allegations that Reggie Lewis used drugs while at Northeastern. The eight-member panel, which presented its report to Curry this month, found a sports program that was generally sound but that needed strengthening in some areas, Curry said. The commission also found that while there was marijuana use by some members the 1987 Husky basketball team, there was no evidence that former star Reggie Lewis took drugs during his five years as a Northeastern undergraduate. "I'm extremely pleased the commission found our athletics program to be sound and committed to its student-athletes on and off the field," Curry said in a statement. Citing confidentiality and privacy issues, Curry declined to make public the commission's report. But he did disclose a summary of the panel's major recommendations. Among them: That Northeastern reinstitute random drug testing of its student-athletes and develop a comprehensive drug education and prevention program.

Extractions: Rashard Lewis The Seattle Supersonics has been the story so far at the start of this NBA season. Many basketball analysts had predicted that Seattle would finish among the worst teams in the league, much less make the playoffs. But theyre laughing now as they are currently leading the Wests Northwest Division and amongst the top teams in the very talented Western Conference with a sparkling 15-wins, 3-losses. Although a lot of credit to Seattles success has gone to their all-star guard, Ray Allen, their 25 year old forward, Rashard Lewis deserves equal credit but that is not really in Lewis nature to be in the limelight. In fact, he prefers the anonymity, but that wont last for long as more and more opponents are zeroing in on Lewis as the focal point of their defense. So far this season, Lewis has been playing some solid ball, although many of his teammates and coaches say that he hasnt yet elevated his game. Nevertheless, Lewis is scoring 21.2 points per game, second on the team behind Allen (24.1 ppg), and 17th best in the league. He is playing 39.2 minutes per game (15th in the league), while shooting an excellent 48% from the field including 39% from 3-point range.
