Extractions: The Reggie Lewis Center is the scene for the National Championships in 2005. The Center is named after the local humanitarian and basketball hero, Reggie Lewis, who played collegiate basketball for neighboring Northeastern University (1983-1997) and professionally for the Boston Celtics (1987-1993). Opening in 1995 the Center is an impressive facility situated on the Roxbury Community College campus. It's 70,000 square feet, can seat 3500-5000 people. The track is a 200 meter banked Mondo Super-X Oval with facilities for field events. High Schools Compete at the Nationals Katie Doswell in the 800 meters Katie gave up basketball for track this year and already she has made national news. At the Armory Collegiate Games in New York, February 5, she ran 2:47.10 1000m, US#2 all time. In January, she doubled (1:15.04 500m and 2:52.38 1000m) against a strong regional field at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Anxious to improve, she came to Boston to run the 800m in the USA Track and Field Championships. She finished 5th in her heat with a personal best. 2:08.86. While pleased with her new PR she was disappointed that she didn't make the finals. A high school junior, Katie has been playing basketball. But last fall after giving the decision considerable thought, she decided to do cross country. She likes both sports and sees them as two completely different sports not to be compared. But there is a challenge in running that she is focusing on now. She hasn't looked back one bit.

Extractions: NBA Quarterly Report Here we are, just past the quarter point of the season, and already the NBA has provided its share of stories. Weve seen two unexpected teams in the Phoenix Suns and Seattle Supersonics rise to be the crème de la crème in the NBA, and theyre doing it in an entertaining way running, gunning, and utilizing a 5-man attack on the floor. Conversely, were experiencing a dreadful New Orleans Hornets team that will challenge for the worst record, if theyre current winning (or should I say losing) rate continues. Weve seen the most out-of-control fantastical brawl in NBA history when the Indiana Pacers took on the Detroit Pistons fans, resulting in many altercations, punches, suspensions, and yes, criminal charges. This incident has sparked renewed discussions about the nature of todays athletes and fans, and whether Pacers guard Ron Artest, the central character in the melee, was justified in going after the fan. Weve seen some fine individual performances as well. Youve got your perennials superstars doing what they do: Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Shaquille ONeal, Allan Iverson, and Kobe Bryant. But there is a emergence of players that are knocking on that door of the elite: Early season kudos has to be given to Steve Nash and Amare Stoudamire of the Phoenix Suns; Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis of the Seattle Supersonics; King Lebron James of Cleveland; and young Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. And oh yes, you cannot help but feel that something wonderful is happening with the Grant Hill revival.

I was home for the summer, interning at my Dad's company, playing way too much Tecmo Bowl...then on the night of July 27th...Reggie Lewis dropped dead. I was only 12 when Len Bias did his cocaine and stopped his Celtics career after 48 hours. I don't really remember that day ( Bill Simmons' memories will have to do), but I remember watching the news, spellbound, as the live reports of Reggie's collapse started coming in from Newton Hospital. And when the doctors came out to the microphone, slowly and grimly, it was like getting kicked. Simply unreal. 1993 was the year the Celtics were closing out the Bird/McHale/Parish era. Dee Brown, Rick Fox and Reggie (we really thought!) were going to lead the team into the future. We didn't know at the time that we were in for eight years of Todd Day, Travis Knight, Rick Pitino, ML Carr, and getting dragged through the absolute dregs of NBA existence before Boston ever tasted success again. Celtics PR man Jeff Twiss remembers Reggie here ; the Concord Monitor's Chad Finn has a wonderful elegant tribute. Boston lost something special that day 10 years ago.

Extractions: While passing out during competition or practice is one of the warning signs of a potentially life-threatening heart problem, there are no standards to judge when an athlete should be taken out and rigorously examined. (Kong, 1993) Scheller later defended his decision to allow Lewis to enter the game stating, "If you hear hoofbeats, you think of horses, you don't think of zebras; especially with an athlete that's played for as many years as he has and at as high a level as he has. [Heart disease] is a real curve." The handbook for team physicians states, "an athlete who faints inexplicably during a game or practice should undergo a thorough evaluation before being allowed to compete again." According to a co-editor of this textbook, Dr. Lyle Micheli of Boston Children's Hospital, a "thorough evaluation could be interpreted in a number of ways, including being checked out by a physician in the training room, for instance. I think that's a gray area." After the game, Lewis was subsequently sent to New England Baptist hospital where he underwent a number of tests supervised by a team of 12 of the most respected cardiologists in the Boston area. This team was called "The Dream Team" of cardiologists based on the trendiness of a similar phrase to describe the superior talent of the gold medal winning USA basketball of 1992. After thorough testing, the Dream Team diagnosed Lewis to be suffering from ventricular tachycardia, the most dangerous form of arrhythmia. The cause of this was believed to be focal cardiomyopathy, a disease of heart muscle. Of the various forms of arrhythmia, some are harmless and others are potentially life-threatening, such as this diagnosed one. Dr. Stanley Lewis, director of clinical cardiology at New England Deaconess Hospital and member of the Dream Team, said, "When you talk about arrhythmia's that result in loss of consciousness you're dealing with a deadly arrhythmia."
