As the driving force in turning around - in one season - one of the worst franchises in sports history, Kidd deserved the MVP award in 2002 and he certainly deserves a max contract from the Nets. But his final negotiating tactic with New Jersey - demanding coach Byron Scott be fired for him to consider returning - is about as deplorable as they come and puts Nets GM Rod Thorn in an impossible situation. Who wins here? If Thorn takes the high road (which he should) and keeps Byron Scott at the expense of losing Kidd, then the Nets will suffer and people will point to Scott as the reason a great team fell to pieces. If Thorn lets Kidd run the asylum then what does that say to the rest of the players about respecting their next coach and why would any coach walk into that situation? Kidd looks pretty sleazy here either way and I can't imagine why he'd want to leave that kind of legacy when he's been so embraced by the New York Metro area. He's now as good as gone - unless Thorn does the unthinkable and cowers at Kidd's feet - and that's a shame because New Jersey was really onto something with him running the show. Kidd will walk and in offer the pathetic response of, "Well, I told them what I wanted and they didn't accomodate me." J, enjoy life as Tim Duncan's sidekick in a C-level city. Good riddance.
