"He's the leader on the floor he's always talking to his teammates," Parker said before today's game. "He's a great shooter and a very good passer. He's perfect for Europe. Could he play in the NBA? There might be some questions about his defense, but he runs a team pretty good." Jasikevicius said he hasn't ruled out trying the NBA, but he is 27 and quite comfortable playing in Europe. He and Navarro formed perhaps Europe's top back court while at Barcelona, but Jasikevicius has a new team now: He will head off to Maccabi Tel Aviv, another European powerhouse, when this championship is over. "There's a lot about the European style of ball I like," he acknowledged. "And a lot of Europeans have tried the NBA dream and found it is a myth. European ball is getting closer to the level of the NBA, anyway. I don't feel I have to play there to prove myself as a player."

Extractions: Jasikevicius Named Player Of The Year In Europe Former Terrapin given pair of international honors; scored 28 vs. U.S. in the Olympics. Dec. 30, 2004 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Terrapin men's basketball player and current Lithuanian national team member Sarunas Jasikevicius was lauded with a pair of international player of the year awards, as voted by a panel of 72 journalists for the website Eurobasket.com Jasikevicius, who played for the Terps and head coach Gary Williams from 1994-1998, was named the European Player of the Year, which honors the top European-born hoops star playing in all countries, including European NBA players. He was also named the Europe Player of the Year, which includes players on European teams only. Jasikevicius is currently playing in the Euroleague for Maccabi in Tel Aviv, Israel, but next season may return to the Barcelona, Spain, squad he played for from 2000-2003, according to his website. "It has been great to watch Sarunas steadily improve, going from his high school days in Pennsylvania, to playing for us at Maryland, to being named the best player in Europe," said Williams. "It is a great tribute to Sarunas for the time and effort he has put into his game. We are all thrilled that he is probably the most famous player in all of Europe right now."
Extractions: It's been a few days of some big spending for the Cleveland Cavaliers. After reaching an agreement with guard Larry Hughes on Friday, the team has now reportedly sealed the deal with All-Star center Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Combined, the two will make an estimated $120-130 million dollars over five years as the new general manager Danny Ferry is determined to build Cleveland into a playoff team and owner Dan Gilbert is willing to pay the cost. By keeping Ilgauskas in the fold, the Cavaliers ensured there is stability for their superstar LeBron James. James has been vocal about wanting to keep Big Z backing him up and the team finally agreed. Stories from both camps circulated after the season that both sides were destined to part ways this summer, but Ferry was determined to keep the team a winner and knew an All-Star center good for the 16.9 points and 8.6 rebounds was too hard to find. The deal for the 30-year old Ilgauskas is worth between $55 and $60 million but is surprisingly only for five years instead of the maximum six. It was known that Gilbert was wary of signing Ilgauskas long term because of his foot injury history but the two sides obviously met at a compromise. The signing of Larry Hughes, who played for the Washington Wizards last season, proved that the third time was the charm for Cleveland. After being out-bid by Michael Redd's and Ray Allen's original teams, Cleveland was able to convince Hughes to leave DC. Hughes, a 6'5" combo guard, was brought in to be the Robin to James' Batman. Another jack-of-all-trades, although Hughes isn't the shooter Cleveland wanted originally - he is a superb scorer and defender who led the league in steals last season as well as being one of the best in the league at attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. With his scoring average of 22.0 points per game last year, Hughes will find multiple ways of releasing the pressure off the Cavaliers' All-Star duo.
