AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEAson the Dallas Mavericks seemed to be playing the basketball equivalent of musical chairs: There were at least seven players who believed they deserved to start, yet only five openings on the floor. With Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley, Steve Nash, and Antoine Walker locked in to four of the spots and a slew of others craving minutes, newly arrived Antawn Jamison found himself one of the odd men out. But as the sixth man on the team, Jamison played just as important a role to the Mavericks' playoff drive as the Big Four did. He averaged 14.8 ppg on .535 shooting (fourth-best in the NBA) and 6.3 rpg in 29 mpg. Those were numbers better than any other sixth man in the league, and because he started only two gamesas opposed to Manu Ginobili, who started almost half of the San Antonio Spurs' gameshe represents what a true sixth man is all about and earns the honor of being BASKETBALL DIGESTS Best Sixth Man for 2003-04.
