The New York Times, Section 1, Page 22 (March 17, 1996) On the surface, the basketball tournament game between the two top-seeded teams in Stark County, McKinley High School and Jackson High School, had nothing to do with politics. On the surface, it was just another classic matchup in this sports-crazy northeastern Ohio county, where 5,000 fans turn out for high school basketball games and 20,000 for high school football games. But on another level, McKinley versus Jackson may say more about what is at stake in politics than the latest Presidential primary results, which have put even the party faithful here to sleep. McKinley, the Canton city high school, versus Jackson, the suburban township high school, is about two different ways of living in Stark County and America.

Long Gym. It was the Cajuns final exhibition game before embarking on a two-week trip that begins Friday against UC Davis at the Radisson Inn Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo. After trailing by six at the half, the Cajuns began the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 42-41 lead. It was the Cajuns first lead since the 8:26 mark of the first half. From there, the teams exchanged leads eight times, with neither able to grab a substantial edge. Jackson led 50-46 with 13:09 to play, but Louisiana took a 64-61 lead with just 5:40 remaining. The Cajuns transition offense and athleticism helped them stay in front against a Babes team with only six players on their roster. Solid defense and just four second half turnovers kept the Cajuns in front.

Among the preeminent talents in the National Basketball Association is the outspoken forward of the Philadelphia 76ers, Charles Barkley, whose quick and aggressive play around the basket has placed him among the league's leading rebounders and scorers since the 1986-87 season. At six feet five inches tall, Barkley is the shortest player ever to lead the NBA in rebounding. The 250 pounds packed onto his relatively stubby frame helps Barkley to overpower taller players; never has a player so heavy been able to leap as high or dribble as skillfully. "Charles Barkley is unique with his body frame, with his structure, with his jumping ability," Pat Riley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and currently the head coach of the New York Knicks, explained to Jan Hubbard of New York News day (February 25, 1990). "The whole thing is unique, and that's why he is truly great." An extraordinarily intense competitor, Barkley plays every game as though it were his last. "A game for Charles is a passionate experience," Matt Guokas, Barkley's former head coach with the 76ers, told Mark Ribowsky for Inside Sports (June 1986). "I've never seen anyone so ferocious in wanting to prove he's better than his opponent." But Barkley's highly emotional nature and his frequently blunt comments to reporters have often made him the center of controversy.

The Seasiders trailed by as many as four points in the first half, but never trailed in the second despite a desperate comeback attempt by the Mustangs. BYU-Hawaii moves to 19-4 (8-2 in the PacWest) while Western New Mexico fell to 7-14 (4-7). The game was barnburner throughout. Both teams were knotted at 41 points at the intermission but the Seasiders opened up nine-point lead in the second half when WNMU got two technical fouls within a two-minute period. BYU-H out rebounded the Mustangs 28-20 for the game, a total that is uncommonly low for college basketball but the teams field goal percentages were 58 (BYUH) and 55 (WNMU) for the game there just werent a lot of rebounds available. The Seasiders turned over the ball 25 times to WNMUs 20. The Mustangs had four players in double figures on the night, with Matt Enriquez (El Paso, TX) leading the way with 25 points and seven assists. Adam Grimes (Farmington, NM) checked in with 16 points, while Albuquerque natives Jason Jackson and Jerry Martinez checked in with 14 and 11 points respectively.
Extractions: Tribe Established Team Season Best Score Wiliamsburg, VA - As has been the case for the better part of the last three decades, the Tribes mens gymnastics squad always seems to improve as the season wears on under the tutelage of head coach Cliff Gauthier. The 2005 season seems to be no different, as the Tribe notched its season high score of 209.8 en-route to a resounding dual meet win over visiting United States Naval Academy (204.150) this afternoon in William and Mary Hall. Junior Ramon Jackson (Orlando, FL) led the squad in scoring for the sixth-straight meet as he put to-gether an all-around score of 52.50. This score is made even more impressive when the considering it includes a fall on his specialty event (parallel bars), which resulted in his having his first routine of the season not count towards the team total (was 25 of 25 coming into the event). Jackson was able to put the fall behind him quickly, as he came back and worked an outstanding high bar set which earned him a meet-high mark of 9.05 (which ties his season best, as well). He was also the meets individual high scorer on the vault as well, as he flipped to a mark of 9.35.
