There is no doubt one of the main reasons college head coaches keep making the trip is because of the type of players that coaches like Reginald Mosby keep producing. A couple of names that all college hoops fans will recognize are Tony Harris, who played at Tennessee, and Cedric Henderson who played at Memphis as well as in the NBA. Tony Harris completed his prep career with nearly every award he could muster. Harris was named a McDonalds All-American, Parade All-American and USA Today All-American. As a Vol Harris scored 1,588 points and drove other guards in the SEC crazy. Harris made a name for himself as an excellent defender and for his tireless energy. Cedric Henderson was also everybodys All-American and enjoyed a 5-year career in the NBA. At Memphis, Henderson had a stellar career that resulted in him being the only player in school history to finish in the career top 10 in scoring, steals, and blocked shots. Henderson was selected by Cleveland in the 2

In an upgraded division, the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic present serious challenges to the returning, conference champion Sixers FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS, ever since Shaquille O'Neal changed coasts and moved from Disney World to Disneyland, the one given about the Atlantic Division was that the preseason favorite resided in the Big Apple or South Beach. So last season's run to the NBA Finals by the Philadelphia 76ers was a major shift in the status quo. And if nothing else, NBA teams are reactive to change.

The Lamond Murray for Derek Anderson trade brought the team the much needed small forward. Center Zydrunas Ilgauskas looked sharp and fit in the teams pre-season open scrimmage. Kemp looked out of shape but somewhat lighter than he showed up for camp the previous season, and as out of shape as he was you couldn't argue the numbers he put up. Andre Miller looked like a strong and sizable point. Sura was pushing the ball again, attacking the basket and looked totally relieved to be out from under Fratello's thumb. All looked intact for a formidable team and maybe even as much as a shot at the second round of the playoffs, but then the wheels came off before the season even began. Zydrunas Ilgauskas was the first to fall to injury after opting out of the same surgery that had corrected the problem he had with his other foot.

There is no off season in the Bay Area. Not when the Golden State Warriors have so much work ahead of them. There is not a single NBA team that needs this draft more than your Golden State Warriors. The Clippers have young talent everywhere, the Bulls have a Rose between two phenoms, and the Wizards had the #1 pick last year and can still pray for MJ. The Warriors hang their hopes and dreams on a roster with a few bright spots and surpluses of mediocrity. Warriors fans need reasons to believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The Run TMC days of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin are a distant glow in the past. Currently, there is a glimmer of promise and potential with young players Antawn Jamison and Jason Richardson. But we need more proof that the sun will shine in Warrior land again. Golden State needs the 2002 NBA draft. It is our only hope.

If you like basketball, the Summer Pro League at the Long Beach Pyramid is the place to be. From July 8 to 23, there are five games a day to watch at 10:30 a.m., 12:45, 3:30, 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. Just $12 general admission per day gets you a great seat. Fans can hang over the bleacher railings, see current and future stars up close, and snap a photograph. The arena is big, but you can still hear the players laughing and talking among themselves. Almost all the players sign autographs and some throw their wristbands to fans. Last year Baron Davis, a former UCLA star, was on a team, and when that team won the championship, he threw his shoes up into the crowd, already signed. NBA players Sean Rooks, Lamond Murray and Cedric Henderson have given their shoes after a game, right off their feet.

I talked to close to 100 current and future NBA players, and professional coaches and trainers, to find out the answer to the million-dollar question: How do you make it in basketball? They offered their advice to young players on everything from how much to work out to the importance of having a good agent.
