BASKETBALL These are two possible scenarios for Australia s basketball teams in Atlanta . Mark Bradtke, Scott Fisher, shane heal, Pat Reidy and Andrew Vlahov. http://abc.net.au/olympics_1996/basketba.htm
Extractions: What A Record! by Peter Walsh "Heal passes to Longley. The Boomers giant makes an easy basket and the Australians are now one win away from playing for a medal." "Timms flicks the ball to Maher. The skipper finds Sporn and her two points mean the Opals are into a playoff for gold." These are two possible scenarios for Australia's basketball teams in Atlanta. But the Boomers and the Opals will have to be at their peak to position themselves so near the top of their respective competitions. With the groupings for Atlanta now finalised, Australia's men's team has world powers Yugoslavia and Greece in their side of the draw and the USA, Lithuania and Croatia in the other half. In the women's section Australia is grouped with other medal contenders - USA, Ukraine and Cuba. Brazil, China and Russia are the strongest teams in the other group.

Extractions: Vying for his fourth Olympic Games, blonde superstar Shane Heal has been announced as captain of the Australian men's basketball team, the Boomers. The 186cm, 33-year-old guard from Sydney, was informed of his selection as captain by his coach Brian Goorjian on Monday. "It's a huge honour to represent your country, but to captain your team in an Olympic year is really special and something I will honour," Heal said. "Coming in as captain behind Andrew Gaze leaves big shoes to fill. I am aiming to uphold the fine example set by him." Veteran of three Olympic campaigns, Heal has played at Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney. He has come close to mounting the podium as an Olympic medallist in Sydney and Atlanta and is itching to lead his team onto the court and success in Athens. "It's going to be a difficult task to medal at the Olympics this year. There are plenty of really tough teams out there. We have a young and enthusiastic group and under the direction of Brian (Goorjian) we will come together to try and achieve something special." "The coaching staff and players are very excited about Shane leading the Boomers in 2004," Boomers head coach, Brian Goorjian, said from the Gold Coast today.

Shane might be a novice out here.. but on the court, Shane is a real Aussie success story. In his first season in '88, he was voted Rookie of The Year. Not bad for a bloke who's only 6 foot one - a shorty in basketball. Shane: "Growing up small in a big man's game, I had determination and did not listen to those who said I was too small to make it - you just have to be able to shoot better than the bigger guys." Shane was only the second Aussie ever to play in America's NBA, when he was headhunted by Minnesota.
