Extractions: SAN ANTONIO While watching the movie "Crash," more than once I thought of Rasheed Wallace. Without giving away the plot, "Crash" in the larger sense is one lesson after another that people aren't as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. I needed the reminder not about the fictional people in the movie, but the people I encounter all the time, especially the people I write about in this space. Overwhelmingly, I quickly get sick of guys who are always yapping, always gesticulating and scowling, especially when it's forever humorless and self-righteous. I like my trash-talking economical and tinged with humor whenever possible, as opposed to it being filled with conspiratorial notions of persecution. So anybody who fits that personality type, I find on a good day irritating and on a bad day utterly intolerable. And Wallace is definitely that type. You watch 'Sheed night after night and you just want to say: "Dude, chill. Life is good. You ain't got that much to be angry about." But and this is where "Crash" comes in that's not all Wallace is. He's not just a scruffy irritant, though he is that . . . to me anyway. He's one helluva basketball player, and more importantly one helluva teammate, without whom the Detroit Pistons would not be on the verge of winning a second consecutive NBA championship.

Extractions: The Zen master of the basketball court. Our Paul Solman of WGBH-Boston explains. PAUL SOLMAN: It's finals time for the National Basketball Association, and this year the Indiana Pacers coached by a legend, Larry Bird, are pitted against the Los Angeles Lakers, coached by a curiosity, Phil Jackson. Bird was the master player, winning three world titles in the 1980's. But this is his first trip to the finals as a coach. Phil Jackson, by contrast, was a 6'8" backup teammate of Bill Bradley in the 60's and 70's who specialized in defense his arms so long, he could open both front doors of a car from the back seat at once. Mainly, he was known as the hippie maverick. These days, however, Jackson, is the most successful hippie in the history of NBA coaching, a new-age Philosopher of sorts who won six championships in the 90's with the Chicago Bulls, and is now bidding to become only the second coach ever to win a ring with two different NBA teams. Jackson has had the talent: Michael Jordan in Chicago, now Shaquille O'Neal in L.A. But Jordan never won a crown till Jackson took over, and this, Jackson's first year with the Lakers, is O'Neal's first real shot . So what makes Phil Jackson so successful well, say some, his innovations, like selecting books for his players. This year, he gave Frederick Nietzsche to Shaquille O'Neal.

The team has also done a solid job at the defensive end, limiting foes to a mere 61.1 ppg and only 40.9 percent shooting from the floor. Offensively, the club is netting 65.6 ppg behind the trio of Danny Horace, Chet Mason and William Hatcher. Horace leads the team in scoring and rebounding with his almost double-double average of 15.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg. Mason is second in each category with 14.1 ppg and 7.7 rpg, and is also shooting 43.2 percent from the field. As for Hatcher, he chips in 10.5 ppg and is the team's top three-point threat, knocking down 41.7 percent of his shots from behind the arc. Bowling Green is one of the more well-balanced teams left in the field, but is facing a Miami club which was the best in the MAC during the regular season. The RedHawks have the edge on the boards and should be able to shut down the Falcons' offensive attack in picking up the victory tonight.

Extractions: Alpha Index Index by Sport History Bits Forum ... Search Table of Contents College basketball All-America teams weren't named until 1929, when both College Humor Magazine and the Christy Walsh Syndicate began selecting teams. The first truly authoritative selections were made by the Converse Yearbook , beginning in 1932 and continuing through 1948. Other major selectors didn't get involved in naming basketball All-Americans until after World War II: Associated Press in 1948, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and United Press in 1949, and International News Service in 1950. However, the Helms Athletic Foundation (now the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles) chose basketball All-Americans retroactively, beginning in 1920. The Helms panel named ten players for each year, but didn't categorize them as first team or second team. Several of the other major selectors have chosen second- and third-team All-Americans from time to time, though not with any great consistency. The lists below incorporate the Helms All-American teams from 1920 through 1932. From that point on, players selected by other sources are also included.
