Julius Hodge Jordan Collins and Ilian Evtimov were honored three times apiece. Among the 2004-05 team's achievements were: a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, a Sweet 16 appearance, leading the ACC in three-point field goal percentage (conference games, 40.5%), and finishing the season ranked in the final Coaches Poll. Julius Hodge won both rebounding awards. Hodge won the Lorenzo Charles Award for most offensive rebounds, and also the Ronnie Shavlik Award for best rebounder. Hodge led NC State with 6.6 rebounds per game, and 85 offensive rebounds for the season. Hodge was also named the team's Most Versatile Player.

This could also be the story of the Minnesota Timberwolves. If you didn't know, the T'Wolves are the oldest franchise never to have made the playoffs. The team floundered through six years of bad draft picks Felton Spencer, Luc Longley and strongly conflicting personalities Christian Laettner, Isiah Rider, Coach Bill Musselman before hiring native son Kevin McHale as their general manager in '95. They had been a pitiful cast, struggling to win one of every three games, but now stand perched atop that proud group of Western Conference teams poised to enter the playoffs with losing records. They accomplished this remarkable mediocrity through improving their defense. McHale's acquisition of Kevin Garnett was a gamble offensively, but pretty safe defensively. Garnett brings intimidation to the middle of the defense even if his offense doesn't develop any more than it has. In addition, Tom Gugliotta, fellow All-Star, is a good defensive player with quick hands and rebounding tenacity. Numerically, the T'Wolves are winning now not because Garnett and Gugliotta can score, but because the team defense has improved close to seven points (per 100 possessions) since 1995. The offense has improved less than a third of that. It's boring, but defense is what has turned Minnesota into contenders.

Much to the delight of Walker, that new direction has now taken a familiar turn. ADVERTISEMENT "I wasn't excited about being moved, to be honest with you, but I couldn't ask for a better situation," Walker said from Portland, Ore., where the Hawks will play the Trail Blazers tonight. "I have an opportunity to play with another All-Star and a chance to join a team that's in the thick of the playoff hunt, and I love to play in the postseason. So, I have to thank [Atlanta general manager] Billy Knight for moving me back to a place that I know so well." Don't expect Payton to remain in Atlanta. The Hawks are likely to waive him or buy out his contract, and he could even end up back with the Celtics.

Just two games into his return from a fractured right thumb, Delonte West suffered a broken right hand that will keep the rookie point guard out indefinitely. West broke his hand on an innocuous-looking fall early in the second quarter against Miami Sunday night. He iced the hand at halftime and came back to play in the second half. Postgame X-rays revealed the fracture. ADVERTISEMENT "My hand was numb for most of the rest of the game, so I knew something was wrong," said West. "I want to be out there. I want to contribute.
