Extractions: Roster When the snow falls, the GMC students know its time for basketball! The GMC men's and women's basketball teams both provide plenty of fast-paced action for the campus and Poultney community during the winter months. Both teams ended last season with regional tournament appearances and have made this trip and other national tournament appearances a habit. Players hailing mainly from the eastern seaboard enjoy team trips to Florida, Montana and major cities of the northeast to play against the best competition. The teams enjoy practicing and competing in the Eagle Dome, a spot that defines homecourt advantage; the cozy atmosphere and fans on the floor help the Eagles out when they need it. Student-athletes of the GMC basketball teams enjoy a quality education on and off the court. A few recent highlights:

Extractions: June 11, 2000 Although the Falcons lacked few quality victories outside the conference and played two lower-division opponents, they were strong in a relatively strong league. The Mid-American Conference was a wild race all season, and the Falcons were the team that emerged in the East, playing big when they needed to, until the conference tournament. The Falcon's 58-56 overtime loss to Miami in the MAC Tournament semifinals was downright stunning, relegating them to an NIT bid ... and they lost to BYU in the first round. Losing leading scorer Anthony Stacey will hurt a lot, and losing Dave Esterkamp with him is a tremendous blow. Most of the rest of the team is back, but the Falcons are going to have to find an on-court leader. Expect Jackson's role to be expanded as Bowling Green relies on him to score more often. Brent Klassen will be asked to step up at a forward spot. The tireless Dan Dakich is 50-33 after three seasons at Bowling Green showing improvement in each of the past two seasons. He figures to be around for a while, unless he continues the current trend and is snapped up by a major program along the way. Study his mentor, Bob Knight, and you'll see a lot of Dakich. Veterans Trent Jackson and Keith McLeod should give Bowling Green one of the MAC's finest guard tandems. Center Len Matela will need to prove that he can score without Stacey.

Extractions: April 10, 2000 The perennially powerful Phoenix never could get it going. Road wins were impossible to come by and coach Mike Heideman began to feel the heat from a frenzied fan base unaccustomed to such rough sledding. Green Bay won just once on the road and, compounding the misery, was knocked out in the first round of the league tournament by intrastate rival Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The past season could signal a serious short-term decline in this once-proud program's fortunes. Gone are the two seniors who carried the team, guard B.J. LaRue and forward Jerry Carstensen. With LaRue and Carstensen gone, the team will be more heavily reliant on Canadian center Mike King, a good scorer who played his way onto the league's all-newcomer team. But King can't do it alone and unless a few younger players prove they are ready to accept more of the load, it could be a long winter in Green Bay. Mike Heideman is no Dick Bennett. That's what the critics have been saying ever since Bennett bolted the Phoenix to take the University of Wisconsin job. Today, Bennett is the toast of Cheeseland while Heideman, his former assistant, struggles to keep UWGB above .500. It's Heideman's challenge now to avert what could become a serious decline. Attendance at Brown County Arena is down slightly and, after another season like the one just completed, you can bet even more fans will find something else to keep busy on those frigid Green Bay nights.

Extractions: 1954 Genco Two Player Basketball Description: 2 Player Basketball, Genco, 3/54, two players, manikin players, game comes three ways (Novelty, Deluxe, Super). Novelty has no match or replay function, Deluxe has a match function (win one credit), and Super has a match and a replay setting (allowing up to 16 credits to be won). Each version is easy to identify at a glance based on the main background backglass color. (The Super version has a red background behind the words "basket ball" on the score glass, the Deluxe version is a yellowish-green, and the Novelty version is a light blue. Note there was a reissue version of the backglass made which has a credit window for the "Super" version, but it was made with a light blue ("Novelty" verison) background.) The basketball floor is made of thin adhesive cork with silkscreen red line printing showing the "lane". Back graphics are a curved cardboard arena scene. There is a lock out system for the players; when the game is over, the players can not turn (or when game is in one player mode, the visitor player is locked). The balls used are white hollow exactly 1.5" (38mm) plastic balls, heavier than ping-pong balls (ping-pong balls don't work, due to their light weight and 35mm or 40mm size). A minimum of ten balls are needed for the game to play (barely), but 12 balls should be installed (12 balls are really needed because the balls stack inside the center ball feed tube, and without at least ten balls, the balls will not feed to the players). The game came from the factory with 14 balls, but only 12 are used (the other two were extras). Other Genco games also used this same ball, such as the 1955
