Michael Jordan, while playing for the Chicago Bulls in the 90s, led them to six NBA championship titles. 5-8-03. Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, has asked basketball legend, Michael Jordan to join his Charlotte expansion franchise. TERPS HOOPS--University Of Maryland Men's Basketball Money talks, and it told steve francis to move on to the NBA. Already being rated that high, another year of college basketball could hardly improve his http://www.allsports.com/ncaa/basketball/maryland/francis.html
Extractions: Francis Moves to NBA, Morris Will be Only Returning Starter Written by Jim Johnson Posted 4/2/99 Money talks, and it told Steve Francis to move on to the NBA. I saw the press conference, even read the transcript where he said money was not the main factor in his decision to bypass his senior year at the University of Maryland. Francis indicated his discussions with friends and family, particularly his grandmother, were more influential than the prospect of earning millions of dollars in the pros. Well, golly, why would someone advise a college student to pass up the fun, excitement, and adulation that would come with being one of the top basketball players in the nation at a school where fellow students and fans were wild about him? Why would they suggest he leave that for the possibility of working for the Los Angeles Clippers, the Bermuda Triangle of the NBA, or some other Siberian Outpost such as Vancouver or Sacramento? Could it be, just maybe, THE MONEY!!!!! I do not want to sound bitter or disparaging toward Steve Francis. As I wrote during the season when rumors of his early departure were gaining momentum, I have no idea how to tell a young man, particularly one who has faced the struggles he has, to walk away from millions of dollars. It would be very easy for me to say he should have, sitting in my comfortable home knowing I am extremely unlikely to ever face that type of decision myself. That being said, I fell it would have worked to everyone's benefit if Francis had postponed his NBA career for one more year and returned to the Terrapin basketball team next season.
TERPS HOOPS--University Of Maryland Men's Basketball In the 8147 win over Duquesne, Terrence Morris and steve francis shared top of basketball Williams has brought to the program for years to come. http://www.allsports.com/ncaa/basketball/maryland/puertorico.html
Extractions: Written by Jim Johnson Posted 11/29/98 After dispatching Duquesne to begin the week, Maryland travelled to Puerto Rico seeking their first true test of the season. After blitzing through their first four opponents, they were searching for one whose defeat would thrust them into the national spotlight and validate them as one of the nation's elite teams. Instead, they found an understudy, a team not ready to live up to its advance billing, and a stand-in. As a result, the Terrapins headed home with the Puerto Rico Shootout championship trophy in hand, still unbeaten and untested. They ran their record to 7-0 by trouncing American University of Puerto Rico, #10 UCLA, and Pittsburgh. Combined with losses by #1 Duke, #3 Stanford, and #4 Kentucky, this performance earned Maryland a #2 national ranking in both the latest AP and ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, up from #5 last week. This matches the highest ranking in school history, previously achieved during the 1975-76 season. Maryland has established a theme of featuring a different leading man in each game. In the 81-47 win over Duquesne, Terrence Morris and Steve Francis shared top billing. Juan Dixon and Danny Miller were featured in the 82-32 whipping of AU of Puerto Rico, with Morris and Francis stepping up in the 70-54 triumph against UCLA. A man lost in the crowd so far this season, Laron Profit re-established himself with a spectacular outing in the 87-52 Puerto Rico championship game rout of Pittsburgh, walking away with the tournament's most valuable player trophy.
Steve Francis :: 3 Is The Magic Number See, steve francis has always played and carried himself with a bounce, For basketball purposes, Orlando is home for the time being, and francis swears http://slamonline.com/magazine/features/Franchise83/
Extractions: Steve Francis :: 3 is the Magic Number Steve Francis :: 3 is the Magic Number WORDS :: RYAN JONES PORTRAITS :: CLAY PATRICK McBRIDE Hes had about seven weeks to let it settle, to get used to this new reality, seven weeks for all the emotion to soak in and dissipate. Seven weeks can be a long time. But is it long enough? Sitting in a downtown Manhattan photo studio in the middle of September, waiting for Steve Francis to show up and pose and answer the pertinent questions, this is the one bit of curiosity you cant shake. And thats exactly why, sitting here waiting in the middle of September, you find yourself wondering if seven weeks is long enough. Exactly seven weeks before this scheduled interview and photo shoot, Steve Francis was traded. Hed just finished his fifth NBA season, statistically his worst, but an undeniable success in one category: it was his first that extended into the playoffs. Hed arrived in Houston at the tail end of the Rockets golden era, suffered through the rebuilding period, and seemed ready to lead a return to glory. Hed even gotten the help he needed, in the form of a young Chinese giant already poised for stardom. The turnaround was underway, and even if Yao Ming was now the focal point, Francis figured to be the motor that would power the drive toward future championships. Then he was traded, and he was immediately and publicly not at all happy about it. But he was traded anyway.
Extractions: Sept. 27, 2001 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In 1999, University of Maryland students slept in sleeping bags around the floors of Cole Field House in order to get tickets to watch Steve Francis and his Terrapin teammates play college basketball. Two years later, many of those same students are temporarily without a home following the Sept. 24 tornado that swept through the Maryland campus, but Francis is on hand to lend a helping hand. Francis, a college All-American in 1999 and the NBA Co-Rookie of the Year in 2000, was on campus last Monday afternoon at the time the tornado ripped the College Park campus. He was on the floor at Cole Field House playing pick-up basketball with several members of the current Maryland basketball team when at 5:20 p.m., the twister roared past Cole and through the northwest quadrant of the campus.
Extractions: Updated Player Profiles in PDF Format On Blake: Sophomore guard who rose to national and ACC prominence in his first college season stepped into a starting role from the time he arrived on campus and never relinquished his position earned ACC postseason honors as a freshman and was one of four ACC players chosen in summer 2000 for the USA Basketball World Championships Qualifying Team. Williams on Blake: "Steve came in under a lot of pressure last year because he had to play. Losing Steve Francis and Terrell Stokes, that left Steve as the only pure point guard in the program. To come in and do what he did as a freshman in terms of being tough with the ball and playing good defense, it was a big plus for us last year. It was critical to our success. His offense really got stronger as the year went on. He's starting from a very good position this year in terms of what he can do as a point guard. He's going to be asked to do more things this year, but I think Steve's the type of player that likes that responsibility." High School: International: Member of USA Under-20 World Championships Qualification Team which participates in Brazil, July 19-24, 2000 ... helped lead the United States to a gold medal in the 1998 Junior World Championship qualifying tournament prior to his senior season at Oak Hill as he played in all six games of the tournament and averaged 14.5 minutes per game tied for the team lead in assists with 20, an average of 3.3 per game credited with a team-high four assists in the gold medal game against Argentina had four assists in preliminary games against Canada and Cuba, and five vs. Brazil scored a personal-best eight points against Canada in the first game of the tournament scored on five-of-nine free throws against Canada selected as a member of the U.S. Junior World Championship Team which played in Portugal in July of 1999.
Extractions: The cardinal rule of NBA trades is that you make sure you dont trade an All-Star to a team that youll have to face very often. Keeping that rule in mind, the Orlando Magic sent Tracy McGrady across the Western Conference boundary when they gave up on having any chance to re-sign him. McGrady is quick to point out and proud to boast that he was not traded by the Magic he forced a trade. The Magic had no choice in the matter. The Houston Rockets, on the other hand, did have a choice in the matter. Their choice was to let go of a point guard who could not see beyond his own stats and see what was in the best interest of his team. The trade has worked out well for both teams. McGrady is slowly realizing that the Rockets are not ever going to be Yaos team. Yao simply does not have the mentality of a franchise player. More and more we see McGrady making the Rockets his own, which includes changing the slow-down Van Gundy offense into a running game that better utilizes the style of play McGrady is accustomed to. Francis, meanwhile, is playing alongside resurrected veteran Grant Hill, who at times seems to have Francis ego under control. Thats a tall order, though, even for someone like Grant Hill. Steve Francis has elevated himself to the status royalty, including referring to himself in the third person. This is consistent with the young man who always insisted his Rockets were a better team than most of the rest of the league even when they failed to make the playoffs for the third straight season. He has a swollen sense of self-worth, and the Rockets are better off for being rid of that. No one knows that better than Cuttino Mobley.
