Extractions: DeKALB, IL-With Friday's season opener just 72 hours away, Northern Illinois University head coach Rob Judson wanted his team to see improvement from last week's exhibition to Tuesday (November 12) contest. The Huskies progress was very evident as they ran away with a 98-66 victory over the NBC Thunder in exhibition play. Six different Northern Illinois players scored in double figures, led by junior Marcus Smallwood (Elgin) has he topped all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting. The 6-foot-6 forward posted his second double-double of the exhibition schedule as he notched a game-high 13 rebounds with eight of his boards coming on the offensive glass. "We took some steps forward from our last game," Judson said. "We wanted to attack offensively and I like the way we shot. The only thing we need to do is work on our free throws." Smallwood's baker's dozen on the boards was part of a Huskie rebounding effort that held a 53-33 advantage over the Thunder. All 12 Northern Illinois players recorded at least one rebound, with five different Huskies grabbing four or more boards. Joining Smallwood in double figures on the glass was forward

From The Sidelines: Jordan: Still King Of The Castle? | Jan 28, 2000 breaking Cleveland s heart with a lastsecond jumper over a cowering craig ehlo . Not only was Jordan a great basketball player, but the final image http://www.yaleherald.com/archive/xxix/2000.01.28/sports/p28jordan.html
Extractions: In contemporary American idolatry, Michael Jordan, for many people, falls just behind God and slightly ahead of Mom and Dad. The images are crystallized in our minds: Jordan hitting the last shot he ever took to win the NBA championship, Jordan dunking from the foul line, Jordan breaking Cleveland's heart with a last-second jumper over a cowering Craig Ehlo. And it wasn't just his skill; at the end of his career, a cologne company needed only the silhouette of his head to market its product. Even today, everyone wants to Be Like Mike. If you haven't seen the commercial (that is, if you've been in Greenland for the past six months) it goes like this: we hear strains of the Stevie Wonder song "Overjoyed," that pæan to lovers and dreamers, and soon images of Jordan's hand-picked stable of stars start to flash in front of us. But the last image may be the most surprising. We see a smiling Jordan, not in his uniform but in a natty gray suit and a long overcoat with his diamond stud gleaming, smiling softly as he walks toward us across a surreal green expanse under an impossibly blue sky. As the picture fades out, we are left with Wonder's chorus: "Over time/I've been building my castle of love...And though you don't believe that they do/Dreams do come true...And you too might be overjoyed."
Joe Netsfan - Backlash - Kudos! Plus, Our First Email As for your bizarre craig ehlo fixation, uh, I can only guess that you must berelated to him. The NETS are by far my absolute favorite basketball team. http://www.joenetsfan.com/NetsSeason2000_2001/Backlash2000_2001Files/joe_netsfan
Extractions: I have thought long and hard about Byron Scott. I want him fired for good. I am fed up with coach Scott. I don't think he is the right guy for the Nets at all. Lots of players have regressed under Scott. Lots of players have shown no respect for Scott. Some have taken advantage of Scott. Some admitted they didn't want to play hard for Scott. These variables have shown that he has to go. It's going to be hard to get rid of players with the money they make. Plus considering that K-Mart (Kenyon) and Scott did not see eye-to-eye should seal Scott's fate. Lots of players are not going to go through the wall for Scott so why make Scott suffer? Fire him and hire Nets T.V. analyst Jim Sparnakel to coach this team. Considering that baseball T.V. analysts have succeeded, I think it's worth giving Jim a shot. I think Jim can bring a fresh face to the team. I refuse to watch, listen or even read about the Nets unless they prove they care. I would be excited to follow the Nets if Sparnakel got the job.

In the deciding game of a best-of-five, first-round series in the 1989 playoffs, Jordan made one of his most famous shots, a jumper at the buzzer from just beyond the free-throw line that gave the Chicago Bulls a 101-100 win against Ehlo's Cleveland Cavaliers.

E-mail the Herald Kamiakin football coaches get chance to scout NFL staffSome little tidbits to get us through the middle of the week: Here's an "up" story: Kamiakin coach Craig Beverlin ran into a San Diego Chargers scout a few months ago, and the two men got into a conversation. "He told me that (general manager) Bobby Beathard and (owner) Alex Spanos like having high school coaches at their camp," Beverlin said. The scout offered them a front row seat with the Chargers coaches for a few days. Beverlin took him up on the offer, and nine Kamiakin coaches are paying their own airfare to San Diego, where from July 28-Aug. 1 they will sit in with the Chargers' coaches, eat meals with the team - basically live their life for a few days. At the same time, the Kamiakin coaches get a peek at the Chargers' 4-3 defense, ranked No. 1 in the NFL last season. Kamiakin runs the same type of defense, Beverlin said. "We're intrigued with what they do," Beverling said. "They have Junior Seau in the middle linebacker spot, and we're just interested in how they do it."
