Extractions: STEVE YEATER / AP Vlade Divac, left, shown with Sacramento teammate Peja Stojakovic, inspires respect among countrymen entering the NBA. Divac is viewed as an icon in his homeland In many ways, Vlade Divac could be considered a modern-day Jackie Robinson. He wasn't the first player born outside of the United States to play professional basketball in the United States. That honor belongs to Henry Biasatti of Italy, who played in the Basketball Association of America, the NBA's predecessor, in 1946. Nor was Divac the first to gain mainstream acceptance in the league. That would have been the late Drazen Petrovic, who starred with the New Jersey Nets before his untimely death in a car accident 11 years ago. And Toni Kukoc was perhaps the most coveted European player before Detroit selected 18-year-old Darko Milicic No. 2 overall in last year's NBA draft. Divac, however, is the reigning king of international players, while Peja Stojakovic, his Serbia-Montenegro countryman and Sacramento Kings teammate, is the crown prince. "He's like our father for basketball," Sonics forward Vladimir Radmanovic said of Divac. "When we first came in, each one of us, he was the guy that was here. He has a lot of experience. ... It was great to have somebody here to teach us how and show us what we need to do."
Extractions: SportsTicker BELGRADE, Serbia - One of the most versatile centers in the NBA, Vlade Divac announced his retirement Thursday. Divac, who averaged 11.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists during an NBA career that spanned 16 years, had been expected to delay his decision until Sept. 30 but hasn't been able to shake a back injury. One of most popular Serbia-Montenegro basketball players of all time, the 7-footer planned to finish his career back in his homeland with Partizan Belgrade, the club he left to join the Lakers in 1989. But any hopes of an emotional return now appear to be dashed. The 37-year-old, who signed a extended contract with the Lakers last summer, underwent back surgery six months ago and played only 15 games last season, averaging just 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds. "My back is causing me a lot of problems," Divac said. "At the moment I don't feel pain, but after four or five days of playing I feel it a lot. There is just a 50-50 chance for me to be fully recovered for the new season. As I don't want to become a disabled player, I think this is a right time for me to stop playing basketball."

Extractions: 27 March 2000 VIENNA, 28 March (UN Information Service) The United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) will announce the world-wide launch of an anti-drug public service announcement featuring Sacramento Kings star Vlade Divac as part of NBA.com Global Week activities at the NBA Store on Fifth Avenue in New York on Thursday, 30 March at 1 p.m. The UNDCP also named Mr. Divac a "Goodwill Ambassador for Sports against Drugs". The television spot features Mr. Divac promoting playing sports instead of using drugs. "Playing basketball taught me the value of determination and teamwork", Divac says in the 30-second video. "So dont play with drugs, play sports, and realize your dreams." The video was created in both English and Mr. Divac's native Serbian and was jointly produced by NBA Entertainment and the UNDCP. "We need more role models like Vlade Divac who love sports and want to communicate the dangers of abusing drugs to young people around the world", said United Nations Under Secretary-General Pino Arlacchi, the Executive Director of the Vienna-based UNDCP. "This is a great example of how professional sports leagues can work with the United Nations to promote a drug-free world."
